After taking first dose of Levaquin I began to suffer numerous side effects. Accelerated heart rate, severe pain all over my body, severe insomnia, chest pain, burning sensation going all through my body, neck pain, headache, muscle twitching. I felt like I was dying. After 4 days on the medicine I decided to look up the side effects on the internet where I found countless people suffering the same things. Some with permanent damage. I stopped taking after 4 days, it has been 4 days since I stopped and I still feel horrible. I am still in pain and feel like my nervous system is freaking out. This is an extremely dangerous antibiotic and should not be given without these warnings. I personally do not believe it should be given to anyone.

16. Was the information you found of any value to you? YES
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have:I just wanted to share my story
and hope that it helps others. On December 20th I was prescribed Levaquin to
help clear up a bad case of Bronchitis that I had taken a Z-Pac for a week
earlier. I still had remnants and the doctor saw as fit to give me the Levaquin
to help me get over what was remaining. I had a 10 day supply of the 500mg
Levaquin prescribed to take once a day. After (2) two days of taking the
medicine I noticed that I was having a slight amount of pain in my left knee,
and by the 23rd of December it hurt to walk or stand or sit. The pain was just a
dull ache however; it would also become sharp with any movement. Just to let you
know I finished all of my 10 day supply, not knowing that the Levaquin was what
was causing my problems. I am a healthy 31 year old male that has a 3 year old
daughter, so I am always on the go. However, beginning the 24th & 25th of
December the pain had spread from my left knee to my right kne
e, ankles, as well as hip bones. By the end of my prescription my pain was all
over my body, it hurt to sleep, it hurt to move, however, taking 800 mg of
Motrin every 6 hours seemed to help ease the pain but never seemed to knock it
out. I tried everything from Tylenol to Aleve...however, Motrin was the best.
Not knowing what had caused my problems, and getting tired of being in pain I
went to see my family medical physician on the 7th of January. He ran me through
the mill with test to figure out what was going on. Nothing out of the ordinary,
I was a little anemic, however, that had nothing to do with my problems. We
talked about the Levaquin, and he as most doctors dismissed the chance of that
being the case. However, he did prescribe me 200 mg of Celebrex per day, and
told me to take Tylenol as needed to help with the pain. After taking the
combination of those drugs for 10 days, I called his office back and told him I
was still having problems not as strong as before and I cou
ld tell I was getting a little better however movement was still bad, so he
referred me to a Rheumatologist. I saw the Rheumatologist on Jan. 22nd and he
seemed to help more than anyone else, he also did some blood work, however,
nothing out of the ordinary once again, he also check for arthritis, and nothing
came of that either. He believes that the medicine was the root of the problem,
and until it is gone from my system nothing I am going to continue to have
problems. He upped my Celebrex to 2 times per day, and told me to take Tylenol
Arthritis 2 pills 3 times a day...this combination has almost knocked away all
of the pain. I can still tell that I have problem areas such as my wrist when
opening the car door; however, hopefully those will go away in time. Apparently,
according to him there is a small amount of people in the world that is allergic
to fluoroquinolone drugs and do not know it until they take one of these. I went
back to see the Doctor yesterday and he released me
, I feel like a new man since going to the Celebrex Twice a day, dont get me
wrong I still have problem areas, however, the fact that I can get up and walk
again, is a tremendous accomplishment compaired to where I was almost two months
ago.

Severe ankle and foot pain which radiates up my legs* My feet and ankles never stop aching. The arches of both of my feet also hurt.
Hips and knees and back ache and hurt worse when I walk
Standing and walking is very painful and the more I walk the more painful it is so I am forced to be quite inactive which is really depressing me.
Can't stand to wear shoes or socks and can only stand slippers briefly due to soreness/sensitivity in feet and ankles.
Wrist, hand, fingers thumb pain including shooting pains
Joints very stiff. It hurts to open and close my hands or bend my wrists.
Every joint in my body aches. Joints that bothered me before (cervical spine) hurt even worse now after having taken Levaquin.
Skin very sensitive all over. Even bedsheets and slippers are uncomfortable on my skin.
Tongue and throat feel sore due to stomatitis/thrush which I can not get under control even after tons of yogurt, acidophilus and 2 rounds of diflucan
Eyes very dry, sensitive to light, bloodshot and very painful. I have to wear sunglasses all the time.
Spacey, surreal feeling
Muscles ache all over
Arm muscles so sore that it hurts to do anything. Even brushing my teeth is painful to my hands and arms.

Sharp pain between shoulder blades at times when I move a certain way. It's so bad that it takes my breath away.

A full feeling in my head and ears
Feel ill in general. The only thing that compares to this is when I had the flu and high fever. I felt so bad that I wanted to die but at least I knew that the flu symptoms would eventually end. yes, my left nasal passage was swabbed and cultured and b cepacia was the result.
12. What reason(s) was the drug prescribed?
I don't know why he chose this drug because I did not have the opportunity to talk with him. He is known to be a very reputable MD. I just assumed that he knew what he was doing and that he had prescribed the most appropriate antibiotic for the type of infection that I had.
13. Did you receive any benefit from being on this drug?
The nasal odor that brought me to the physician's office in the first place is gone. However, I still have discomfort in my left sinus area. I was recultured two days ago so I'll soon find out whether or not the Levaquin eradicated the bacterial infection or not.
14. How did you find the fqresearch site?
15. What made you log unto the site?
I logged in because I am doing everything that I can to find out how to get this dangerous drug off the market or at least get the proper warnings for it. It should only be used as a last resort. It is prescribed without reservation for even minor problems and it is destroying people's lives. I logged in because I want to contribute to educating the public, the health care community and lawmakers regarding the very common serious adverse reactions to this drug. I know that the health care community is painfully unaware of how often this drug is causing problems for patients. Patient's symptoms are being blamed on other things when in fact they are suffering from fluoroquinolone toxicity. How do I know this? Because I have been a RN for 20 years and I can assure you that I have never been made aware of the connection between fluroquinolones and the symptoms I've listed above which are all too common. Most doctors and nurses do not know how dangerous these drugs are. The FDA has failed to protect all of us. How many more thousands of lives will be permanently devastated by this drug?
16. Was the information you found of any value to you?
Yes, very much so. This is a very informative site. I am praying that the information you provide will convince those in power to put a stop to this drug being prescribed so freely.
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have:
I would like to be contacted by anyone who has information regarding anything that I can do to get my information to those who are in a position of power to make a difference. I have submitted a form to MedWatch. I plan to contact congressmen. If there are certain boards, associations or agencies that I should contact please let me know. I am interested in every avenue possible. I am going to contact talk shows and everyone that I can think of. This drug is causing epidemic health problems and the public is being kept in the dark. My email address is poisonedbylevaquin@gmail.com.

2. Drug prescribed: Levaquin 500mg - 1 X PO Q Day X 5 Days
3. Type of physician who prescribed the drug (example, internist, general practioner, specialist, emergency room physician, surgeon, etc.): ER Physician
4. Adverse Events you feel may be related to this drug: Muscle pain particularly in my legs & knees. Loss of appetite; trouble sleeping; diarrhea; nausea; dizziness and severe headache that I am unable to get rid of. I feel like I am 100 years old. I cannot get up without assistance or something to hold on to.
5. Physician’s reaction to your concerns: Did not talk to my physician about the side effects yet.
6. Did your physician exhibit ANY prior knowledge concerning the adverse reactions associated with the fluoroquinolones? No. He also did not mention anything about contraindications with other medicines I'm taking such as Effexor or Vicoprofin & Vicodin. In fact he prescribed Vicodin along with the Levaquin. He also did not (obviously) consider that I have Fibromyalgia already!
7. Was your physician willing to admit that the drug could possibly be responsible? We'll see when I talk to him. I am not returning to see the ER doctor I will talk to my regular physician.
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience? No
9. Did the physician enter into a risk/benefit discussion prior to prescribing the drug? No
10. Was the drug prescribed for "off label" use (meaning NOT an approved use)? No - it was for a UTI
11. Was testing done to confirm or deny the presence of a bacterial infection? A UA was done with Culture and Sensitivity
12. What reason(s) was the drug prescribed? UTI
13. Did you receive any benefit from being on this drug? Well the UTI is gone, but the side effects seem to be worse than the cure. I was experiencing pain from the UTI but the pain in my muscles and the other side effects are causing pain much worse than the UTI
14. How did you find the fqresearch site? I finally hurt so much I did a web search and found this link from another site.
15. What made you log unto the site? I wanted to learn more and also submit information for this survey in hopes it helps other people. 16. Was the information you found of any value to you? Absolutely! I am going to give the information to our doctors and nurses. This is ridiculous. This drug should be taken off the market. This is no different than the drugs which have been pulled due to other issues such as suicide etc. In fact I could absolutely foresee someone committing suicide after dealing with pain like this long term.
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have: I work in a hospital and Levaquin is prescribed like ASA. I went to the ER the other night while working because I had a terrible UTI. After one of my co-workers, an RN, learned what I was given she told me to watch for symptoms such as severe leg pain etc. She knows I have Fibromyalgia and she wanted me to be aware. She had been given Levaquin previously and told me she was now listing it as an allergy and would never take it again. I was already into Day 3 of the treatment and decided to finish it - but did so with much reluctance. The symptoms got worse with each passing day. I am now Day 2 Post Treatment and the pain is only very very slightly better. It gives me insight to issues many of the patients experience that we attributed to other things. The community I live in is very rural and we have lots of geriatric patients. I cannot imagine being 80 years old having all the issues that come with age and then taking Levaquin. It also reminded me of a patient we had that all of a sudden developed such severe leg pain he couldn't get up. I would go in a rub his legs at night and tried all kinds of things to make him feel better. At times I could literally FEEL his calf muscles tighten up in my hands. He had never had any pain like this before and was previously an active senior citizen. He ended up going to a rehab facility and I am unsure what happened to him. But he was on IV Levaquin. OH and the patients we have we C-Diff! It's like an epidemic! It’s the same old thing over and over. Patient is admitted for Pneumonia and given Levaquin and the C-Diff comes along with all the other symptoms I read about. I will NEVER EVER take this drug again nor will any member of my family.

17. Additional comments or concerns you may have:
where do I start - After my 911 call, they found a brain hemorrhage in the ER thru CAT scan.. had emergency brain surgery to remove the clot. 2 nights later my brain apparently swelled where the surgery was done and the fluid wasn't circulating (non-communicating hydrocephalus). Was unconscious and inches from death in the ICU. Ventriculostomy was then performed (basically, a needle was put into my brain and the backed up fluid was drained). Neurosurgeon could find no cause, i didnt mention the Avelox because i had finished it (also couldn't imagine it causing anything so horrible) and they asked if i was currently taking anything.
Was in the hospital a month in a wheelchair.
Had leg pain, shoulder pain and hand pain - all confirmed with MRI's showing tendon breakage.
Couldn't pee or poop, had daily catheter insertions.. man that was awful
After finally going home (my own decision, had enough of that BS) had to use a walker and cane, shower seat, couldnt drive, barely walk, was left crippled and brain damaged, lost my job, house and car - had to sell everything to survive.. lost everything. To this day i am brain damaged, hard to walk as well as talk.. cant speak well anymore and on disability. Tried to sue but no lawyer wants the case.
had a strange tingling in my mouth/lips that eventually spread out to my nose, face. Everything tasted metallic.
Left arm and hand is still impaired - hard to move, very uncoordinated, can only type 1 handed. And to top it off i played guitar in a band for 20 years.. Sadly that is no longer possible
Anxiety level is through the roof
Double vision for months
Physical therapy for a year.. mental therapy for 6 months.. on Zoloft for depression
I cant go on, too painful to recount the incident... sorry

4. Adverse Events you feel may be related to this drug:
Tendon/muscle pain and "snapping" in the bicep region of the right arm. Later tendon/muscle pain in bicep region of left arm, also. Ulnar neuropathy of right hand/arm, hives, blistery skin rash in groin area, palpitations of the heart, frequent anxiety, weakness of the lower legs becoming fatiguing at times, and shoulder pain below the rotator cuff area.
5. Physician’s reaction to your concerns:
Administering physician not seen again. Physician seen subsequently stated that symptoms were unlikely related to Cipro. Referred to an orthopedic surgeon for consultation on shoulder pain. Orthhopedic surgeon refused to consider any relationship of symptoms to Cipro. He recommended a cortisone injection in the right shoulder, which I refused.
6. Did your physician exhibit ANY prior knowledge concerning the adverse reactions associated with the fluoroquinolones?
No. None of the three physicians visited said anything about any adverse reactions.
7. Was your physician willing to admit that the drug could possibly be responsible?
Our GP (#2) said "it was not impossible, but highly unlikely" that Cipro could cause the symptoms. The orthopedic surgeon said Cipro couldn't be causing the continuing symptoms because the drug would have been out of my system for a long time.
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience?
No.
9. Did the physician enter into a risk/benefit discussion prior to prescribing the drug?
No.
10. Was the drug prescribed for "off label" use (meaning NOT an approved use)?

16. Was the information you found of any value to you?
Yes. It further convinced me that my symptoms I had were Cipro-related.

4. Adverse Events you feel may be related to this drug: foggy brain, lightheadedness, insomnia, numbness in forearms and hands when sleeping, strong sensitivity to light, sensitivity to motorized sounds, anxiety, motor skills seem a bit off or out of sync, head feels heavy, previously had difficulty swallowing-would choke, got real jittery when taking medication usually within 20 minutes of ingesting it but while on IV in hospital was also anxious and had numbness in hands and forearms. Assumed it had to do with me sleeping in a hospital bed rather than the drugs.
5. Physician’s reaction to your concerns: advised him of jittery/wired feelings while taking meds and he urged me to continue the full course….this was the GI doctor. After 2nd or 3rd call about my discomfort from taking them he advised me to stop but we had taken 9 days and 1 of 3 pills on last day.
6. Did your physician exhibit ANY prior knowledge concerning the adverse reactions associated with the fluoroquinolones? Never rmentioned it to me although the nurses did say that some people have trouble taking it.
7. Was your physician willing to admit that the drug could possibly be responsible? Not particularly. I have never brought this up with him but family DR attributed my symptoms to stress, Since then I have seen a psychologist and psychiatrist for therapy assuming It was stress related. Both have been somewhat confused by the head issues and sensitivity to light as well as the numbness and chest flutter I had been exhibiting. A number of side effects kicked in well after my hospitalization, although the heavy head, foggy brain and motor skill awkwardness was immediately after meds. I hadn’t considered a connection to this during my therapies until almost a year after my hospitalization when the drug came up in a social conversation with someone who had a reaction. Never knew what a fluoroquinolone was until August of 2007 and my troubles started in August of 2006…biggest symptoms arose around November/December of 2006 and lasted very promimently through may of 2007…still have problems with sensitivity to light, numbness, and foggy head/motor skills while speaking.
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience?-absolutely not! On IV in hospital and no one hinted at side effects.
9. Did the physician enter into a risk/benefit discussion prior to prescribing the drug? No—in my mind it was like an antibiotic for a cold
10. Was the drug prescribed for "off label" use (meaning NOT an approved use)? no
11. Was testing done to confirm or deny the presence of a bacterial infection? I had a cat scan which showed some elevation in my bowel leading them to believe I had diverticulitis
12. What reason(s) was the drug prescribed? diverticulitis
13. Did you receive any benefit from being on this drug? I suppose the infection going away but to be honest I am unable to work in my profession due to the vision motor skill problems—airline pilot with no previous problems with my health ever other than a hernia repair.
14. How did you find the fqresearch site? From a friend after a dinner conversation regarding her reaction to Levaquin. Never entered my mind until this last august that this was a potential side effect problem from the drugs I took.
15. What made you log unto the site? Trying to get some information and guidance to understand this. It is a help but since no scientific evidence exists no doctors seem willing to acknowledge the potential problem here.
16. Was the information you found of any value to you? Yes but now I am very frustrated/angry and uncertain how to proceed with respect to this.
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have: lack of information or treatment ---I also think it should be mandatory that a patient on an IV be told of side effects similar to what you get when you go to the pharmacy. Had I known to even mention the problems to a dr rather than assume they were normal I doubt id be in the shape Im in as we speak. This is horrible!

* Severe joint and tendon pain — knees, ankles, elbows, shoulders, hands. I took 10-days worth of Cipro (2 x day) and 4 500 mg doses of Levaquin. The pain became most noticeable during the course of Levaquin. It got bad enough that I called the pharmacist & she recommended stopping the drug & contacting my physician.
5. Physician’s reaction to your concerns: He’s on vacation; however, I’ve talked with the office a number of times. His partner — via the nurse — told me to stop taking it. I’m not sure what to expect from my doctor; hopefully, he will be open to the information I’ve gathered.
6. Did your physician exhibit ANY prior knowledge concerning the adverse reactions associated with the fluoroquinolones? No
7. Was your physician willing to admit that the drug could possibly be responsible? Don’t know yet.
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience? No
9. Did the physician enter into a risk/benefit discussion prior to prescribing the drug? No
10. Was the drug prescribed for "off label" use (meaning NOT an approved use)? No
11. Was testing done to confirm or deny the presence of a bacterial infection? Yes, but drug was prescribed before results returned
12. What reason(s) was the drug prescribed? UTI
13. Did you receive any benefit from being on this drug? Cipro was prescribed for 1st UTI, and it apparently returned. Dr. first prescribed Omnicef, and I had an allergic reaction to it. After allergic reaction, he prescribed the Levaquin. White cells in urine sample went from "moderate" to "trace" after four doses.
14. How did you find the fqresearch site? I searched using "fluoroquinolone tendon," I think ... I’ve done quite a bit of research on this.
15. What made you log unto the site? The presence of actual research paper links. Most of the other sites I’ve found have mainly anecdotal information that can’t be authenticated.
16. Was the information you found of any value to you? Yes. Very much.
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have:
I had some vision disturbances one night that included a half-circle of colorful jagged lines that started quite small and progressed to a larger size and eventually — within about 30 mins — went away. This happened right after I applied some menthol muscle rub & inadvertently inhaled a hefty dose of the fumes while I was washing it off my hands. I don’t know how this relates, but I’ve had no recurrence of this.
Also, for the past two days, I’ve noticed a fullness in one of my ears & my hearing was impaired this morning.
I’m hoping and praying that these muscle/tendon/joint aches and pains go away. I also hope that your efforts are rewarded. This drug is MUCH too toxic to be used for every-day run-of-the-mill infections & w/out close physician supervision.

2. Drug prescribed: Levaquin
3. Type of physician who prescribed the drug (example, internist, general practioner, specialist, emergency room physician, surgeon, etc.) Hospitalist
4. Adverse Events you feel may be related to this drug:
Severe swelling at knees and on both arms. Incredible piercing pain at joints in knees and arms. Swelling that prevents me from walking comfortably.
5. Physician’s reaction to your concerns:
Won't believe that the arm swelling and pain is related to the leg swelling and pain because the onset was about 10 dayd later. Tested for "everything else" and all came back normal but still reluctant to believe that all of this is associated with the Levaquin.
6. Did your physician exhibit ANY prior knowledge concerning the adverse reactions associated with the fluoroquinolones?
This was prescribed initially by a hospitalist who is a friend. My regular GP had no idea what caused the pain. The Hospitalist found the info upon research after the symptoms emerged and phoned my GP and sent documentation. My first visit after the knee swelling was to a walk-in clinic at the practice where my GP is. I did not see my own GP that day. The doc on duty looked up the Levaquin and did NOT find any info suggesting that it was the cause of my pain/swelling. The next day the hospitalist found the info and relayed to my regular GP. The GP was willling to believe that this was a side effect of the Levaquin and that it would wear off in 6=8 weeks. I am at week 5 with no improvement. When the arm swelling and pain started, the GP was less willing to believe that the Levaquin was the cause of that.
7. Was your physician willing to admit that the drug could possibly be responsible?
See no. 6 above.
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience?
NO
9. Did the physician enter into a risk/benefit discussion prior to prescribing the drug?
NEVER
10. Was the drug prescribed for "off label" use (meaning NOT an approved use)?
NO
11. Was testing done to confirm or deny the presence of a bacterial infection?
NO
12. What reason(s) was the drug prescribed?
Sinus infection
13. Did you receive any benefit from being on this drug?
It cured the sinus infection -- but the price I am paying for that is NOT worth it.
14. How did you find the fqresearch site?
GOOGLE search for Levaquin side effects relief
15. What made you log unto the site?
It was one of the top search replies and I was reading through about the top 10.
16. Was the information you found of any value to you?
Yes and no. Affirming to know I am not nuts, discouraging to see that there is little/no relief and no remedies suggested.
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have:
None, thanks for being available.

2. Drug prescribed: Levanquin
3. Type of physician who prescribed the drug (example, internist, general practioner, specialist, emergency room physician, surgeon, etc.) General Practitioner
4. Adverse Events you feel may be related to this drug: I am certain the drug caused these adverse effects. Upon taking first dose, I felt sick to my stomach, shaky, ect. as if I had caught the flu... I didn't know at that time it was the medication. 3 days in, I was limping as if I had twisted my ankle... This leg pain got worse and eventually felt
like someone had hit my leg with a baseball bat. It was swollen as well. I had random pains throughout my body and headaches for 10 days straight. Inflammation was found via MRI... I also ended up being diagnosed with Asthma, which may have been inflammation from the medicine...or a worsening of the bronchitis? I had originally. I no longer have "asthma"... and never had it before. I also had little energy for about 3 months, and even the slightest physical
effort caused exertion. The backs of my knees swelled, and the circulation in leg that ached the most was poor, my
foot was purple... Months later, my vision isn't the same, and I am not certain it wasn't related. I also had a recent bout of headaches for 3 weeks (not prone prior) and I hope is not related, as I have heard the medication can cause MS like lesions.
5. Physician’s reaction to your concerns: I was seen by 3 different doctors who had no clue what was wrong with me... They dismissed my concerns about it being caused by the medicine. One doctor wasn't even familiar with the drug Levanquin.
6. Did your physician exhibit ANY prior knowledge concerning the adverse reactions associated with the fluoroquinolones? No, none
7. Was your physician willing to admit that the drug could possibly be responsible?
Absolutely not, he said very unlikely
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience?
No not at all
9. Did the physician enter into a risk/benefit discussion prior to prescribing the drug? No
10. Was the drug prescribed for "off label" use (meaning NOT an approved use)? I don't know,
what uses it is approved for.
11. Was testing done to confirm or deny the presence of a bacterial infection? None
12. What reason(s) was the drug prescribed? bronchitis? or sore throat I actually forget now,
but could possibly have the file pulled to check
13. Did you receive any benefit from being on this drug? I would say no, as I became so
much sicker than before I had taken it.

15. What made you log unto the site? still concerned with side effects

16. Was the information you found of any value to you? Still reading the site
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have: Still have muscle aches & vision changes, and wanted to find some information on how long I can expect to have side effects, and what they might be, and what I can do to help them subside. I would also like to add, that the doctor gave this to me as a from his stock, not via prescription.

15. What made you log unto the site? Searching for info on how to get over the pain.
16. Was the information you found of any value to you? Yes
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have: After several other types of antibiotics were given for a severe cough I was given Leviquin in March by a Community Care Dr.. No severe reactions at that time, in retrospect possibly achy muscles, nothing severe. After going to another Dr. for worsening cough I was given this drug in conjunction with Prednisone. After two doses the pain was so severe I stopped taking the medication, ending up in the emergency room where of course the ER Dr. refused to believe it was a drug reaction. I searched the internet for possible interaction info. Found one site saying the label had been changed in 2001 to reflect contraindication of cortisone type meds and leviquin. Will research that further.

My husband’s name is Jason Garner and twelve years ago
Ciprofloxacin changed our lives forever. My husband was convicted of
second-degree murder and aggravated robbery and until 2004 we could
never understand what it was that sparked this peculiar behavior. All
him and I knew that it was not until after he got sick that his
behavior changed.
In September of 1995 my husband murdered a good friend of his. He
could not remember committing the crime unless he was having
nightmares. When he was assigned a public defender we told him that my
husband’s behavior did not change until he was diagnosed with a severe
urinary tract infection. His attorney at that time said he had gone to
the hospital and there was no record of my husband coming to the
hospital. We proceeded to trial just knowing that this was an accident
but no other explanation. The jury came back with guilty of
second-degree murder and aggravated robbery and he was later sentenced
to forty years at 100%. My husband made me promise to find out what
really happened that day.
In 2004 I decided to go to the hospital my husband had gone to a
couple of weeks before the crime. The record clerk told me that all I
had to do was get my husband to sign a form releasing his medical
records to me. So that’s what I did and I received his medical record
three weeks later and took it to the local pharmacist and that’s how I
was introduced to Ciprofloxacin. The pharmacist explained the side
effects of Cipro and gave me a pamphlet as well to read. I have done
extensive research for the past three years on the side effects of the
drug.
My husband is still currently incarcerated at West Tennessee
Penitentiary serving his forty years however he is on post conviction
hoping his attorney was ineffective for failing to get the medical
records. If there are any similar cases please email me at
wheelsofjustice1235@hotmail.com or just anyone know anything that can
be beneficial.

NOT YET COMMUNICATED
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience?
NO
9. Did the physician enter into a risk/benefit discussion prior to prescribing
the drug?
NO – THE DRUG I HAD BEEN PRESCRIBED BEFORE FOR THE SAME PROBLEM (A UTI) WAS NOT
GIVEN
10. Was the drug prescribed for "off label" use (meaning NOT an approved use)?
NO
11. Was testing done to confirm or deny the presence of a bacterial infection?
YES
12. What reason(s) was the drug prescribed?
URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI)
13. Did you receive any benefit from being on this drug?
YES, THE INFECTION RESOLVED
14. How did you find the fqresearch site?
THROUGH TWO ROUTES. I FIRST LEARNED OF YOUR SITE THROUGH 'THE FLOX REPORT'.
SECONDLY, I GOOGLED: "NORFLOXACIN HYPERGLYCEMIA", AND IN REVIEWING THE RETURNED
LINKS, I CAME ACROSS YOUR SITE. RECOGNIZING THE NAME FROM 'THE FLOX REPORT', I
OPENED THE LINK.
15. What made you log unto the site?
I WANT TO LEARN MORE. SEE ADDITIONAL COMMENTS.
16. Was the information you found of any value to you?
YES. I'VE JUST STARTED LOOKING INTO YOUR SITE; BUT, IT'S INCREDIBLY HELPFUL TO
FIND ANY INFORMATION.
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have:
(1) I JUST RECENTLY DISCOVERED THE LINK BETWEEN MY "DIABETIC" CONDITION AND
NORFLOXACIN THROUGH RESEARCH ON PUBMED. THE ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS I WAS GIVEN
("TYPE 1.5 DIABETES") NEVER MADE SENSE, EVEN BY THE DOCTOR WHO GAVE IT TO ME (MY
C-PEPTIDE LEVELS AND OTHER LAB WORK WERE NORMAL, MY GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST WAS
NORMAL, THERE HAVE CONSISTENTLY BEEN TIMES WHEN I DON'T NEED INSULIN, AND MY
"DIABETIC" CONDITION DEVELOPED APPROXIMATELY 5 DAYS AFTER I WAS EXPOSED TO
NOROXIN.) WHILE I'VE CONSISTENTLY BROUGHT UP THESE POINTS AT AND SINCE MY
DIAGNOSIS, NO ONE INVESTIGATED MY CONDITION FURTHER. MY ADDITIONAL COMMENT IS:
HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE THERE LIKE ME WHO WERE "PROCESSED" AS DIABETICS, YET
HAVEN'T MADE THE CONNECTION YET BETWEEN EXPOSURE TO A FLUOROQUINOLONE AND THEIR
DIABETIC CONDITION? I JUST HAPPEN TO BE AN ENGINEER AND A PARTICULARLY DILIGENT
RESEARCHER AND EVENTUALLY UNCOVERED THE LINK. MOST PEOPLE WON'T. ONCE YOU'RE
LABELLED "DIABETIC", YOU ACCEPT IT AND MOVE ON.
(2) MY SECOND COMMENT IS: HAS ANYONE LOOKED AT WHETHER THERE IS ANYTHING THAT
CAN BE DONE TO HELP THE BODY RECOVER? I ORIGINALLY HAD DRUG-INDUCED
HYPERGLYCEMIA. I BELIEVE THAT HAS NOW BEEN COMPOUNDED BY THE ADMINISTRATION OF
EXOGENOUS INSULIN (WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY CREATES ANTIBODIES TO INSULIN). I NOW
CONSIDER MYSELF TO HAVE EITHER PERMANENT DAMAGE FROM NORFLOXACIN OR A
DRUG-INDUCED DIABETIC CONDITION CAUSED AND MAINTAINED BY ADMINISTERING EXOGENOUS
INSULIN. MY GOAL NOW IS TO HEAL MY BODY AND WEAN MYSELF OFF INSULIN. ANY
ASSISTANCE IN DIRECTING ME FURTHER TO PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP ME WOULD
BE IMMENSELY APPRECIATED.

nightsweats, knee pain, extreme cold feet, muscle twitching, stomach pain,
confusion (found it hard to speak or come up with certain words), insomnia,
tingling in arms and legs, loss of weight.
5. Physician?s reaction to your concerns: Called and reported symptoms, he had
me make an emergency office visit because he thought I may have an infection or
blocked kidney, did a CT scan, found nothing wrong, no infection in urine
sample, no fever, told me it must be viral.
6. Did your physician exhibit ANY prior knowledge concerning the adverse
reactions associated with the fluoroquinolones? During emergency visit to his
office, I did report I took the Levequin at night to sleep through most of the
dizziness, he then reported to me that this med causes sleep disturbances and
insomnia but did not relate on any of my other symptoms.
7. Was your physician willing to admit that the drug could possibly be
responsible? NO. Other than the sleep disturbances, he had no other idea of why
I was feeling so aweful.
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience? NO!

Had sinus infection and my endocrinologist prescribed be 10 days of Levaquin 500. I had used it in the past and never made the correlation. This time I had dry mouth/nasal/throat which was very debilitating and causes hoarseness. I also had a rough gums in my mouth. I stopped after my 7th pill and have been trying to restore to normal. Body is just now after 3 days making mucous that I can probably use to heal. I have also had sever spasms or cramps in my interior neck muscles. It cuases such an intence pain and lump that I had been to the ENT in the past. He said it was GERD but when it cam back this time I figured it out. I also have insomnia, which is already getting better.

5. Physician?s reaction to your concerns:
After telling the doctor the side effects caused by Cipro, the doctor felt it
might not be a good idea if my husband took Cipro again or any quinolone just in
case Cipro might have caused his injuries. He was concerned about the injuries.
6. Did your physician exhibit ANY prior knowledge concerning the adverse
reactions associated with the fluoroquinolones?
None. I brought up the issue that the FDA had sent out information regarding
side effects from Cipro. He didn't rememeber getting that information.
7. Was your physician willing to admit that the drug could possibly be
responsible?
He admitted that it might be possible, but felt doubt the drug caused the
injuries.
8. Where you given any advice as to what side effects you may experience?
No
9. Did the physician enter into a risk/benefit discussion prior to prescribing
the drug?
No risk was discussed. Impression was the drug would help my husband heal up
faster from any infection. That would have been a benefit.
10. Was the drug prescribed for "off label" use (meaning NOT an approved use)?
I"m not sure for I don't know what conditions are considered not approved for.
11. Was testing done to confirm or deny the presence of a bacterial infection?
No
12. What reason(s) was the drug prescribed?
sinus infection/bronchitis
puncture wound with possibility of infection
13. Did you receive any benefit from being on this drug?
sinus infection and bronchitis seemed to clear up
puncture wound didn't get infected
14. How did you find the fqresearch site?
From being on the Quinolone Adverse Reaction Forum. I came there looking for
answers to what happened to my husband. I had typed in a search engine "tendon
rupture lawsuits" and the name Cipro showed up as causing the type damages my
husband was suffering from. I wanted answers and found the Quinolone Forum.
15. What made you log unto the site?
Information and support in trying to help people understand the destructive
nature of these medicines
16. Was the information you found of any value to you?
Yes it was. It was also frightening. I don't know what all is wrong with my
husband. To see all the things that these drugs can do to a person and wonder if
more terrible conditions will affect him.
17. Additional comments or concerns you may have:
I am deeply concerned that my husband had his muscles and tendons to rip, tear
away or apart and not a single doctor seemed to be alarmed as my husband and I
were. He has seen quite a few doctors at this time and not one of them will
admit Cipro is responsible for this. He has seen at least 3 orthopedic doctors.
Two did surgery on him. The tearing became worse shortly after the surgeries.
After the second tear, I felt something was very wrong and told them I felt
something was causing this. After the third tear I knew something was wrong and
started asking all the doctors if they would please try to find out what it was.
Then the forth tear occurred and I told the doctors that they had to find out
what was wrong because the operations seemed to be making his tearing worse. He
tore two more times after that. His diagnosis was non-trauma ruptures. I have
brought most of these doctors the information of Cipro side effects. I searched
through all my husband's medical records and found that he had taken Cipro and
11 months afterwards his tearing started. It finally stopped after several
years. He took Cipro a second time and his the tearing started again 11 months
afterwards. So simple. Easy to see the cause, but the doctors can't see it even
now. I am concerned that my husband had 6 ruptures and a quinolone was never
considered. If 6 ruptures in one person doesn't get diagnosed as being caused by
a quinolone, then how will people who have one or maybe two find out what's
wrong with them. It makes me wonder how many people here have been injured by
quinolones and how many more will be because the doctors don't recognize it. My
husband was once a strong and proud man. Cipro has caused him so much physical
damage, pain and agony. A doctor asked me why was I so insistent Cipro did this.
I told her that if you have no idea what's wrong with my husband, how can you
help him.

17. Additional comments or concerns you may have:
I took one pill and I thought I had bought the farm. I was otherwise healthy, in my 20's, with no allergies or reactions to any substance natural or synthetic. When I informed by PCP of the adverse reaction he was unimpressed. Were not an EMT, my complaints would have been completely ignored. The good news is I now don't take so much as a cough drop unless I know every single molecule in it and how it might effect my physiology. One pill was all it took. I feel like I dodged a bullet. My heart goes out to those suffering.

short of what comes out of a Krups espesso maker! Nice! It is 2 weeks
later and I am still numb! I am doing my best to walk and try to endure
this terrible reaction. I am trying to be positive, but my body feels
otherwise. Symptoms continue to multiply and escalate. I h
