I have taken 500mg. Levaquin once a day for 4 days. I started feeling
really wierd, like I was walking through a tunnel that was closing in
on me. I have joint pain and really bad leg pain below the knee. I
can't seem to concentrate. I'm really hot, then I get very cold. I've
noticed bruising on my legs. Last night my heart was beating fast when
I was in bed. I didn't take my pill today. My head feels a bit clearer
but my legs still hurt. My sinus pain isn't as bad, but it's not worth
it to feel like this. I won't be taking Levaquin again. I wasn't told
about the side affects.

Hello, As I wrote in April .I was given the drug Levaquin as a
precaution. I learn since then that I have a tumor the size of a
Kidney Bean in my breast, I go for a Ductogram on June 3.After that we
will learn when they will remove the tumor.
I still have the side effect from the Levaquin.I have problems getting
around and some one is always with me at this time.
this is really effecting me now.I used to be real active and now
taking simple walks is very hard. My family and friends have been a
wonderful .
You all are in my Prayers . God Bless

Wow, after reading the side effects at a web site and reading the
stories at this forum I found out that I was experiencing the same
side effects that I read here.
I was being treated for a bacteria infection in my lungs, so my doctor
put me on the 500mg tablets for 10 days (he said this should kill off
any bacteria left around in there), he also prescribed me the Advair
Diskus for my bronchial tubes (took this twice a day (morning and
night)).
Well, the side effects I noticed were the following:
bad taste in my mouth
loss of appetite
nauseua
loss of weight - 5lbs (which of course coincides with the loss of
appetite, "don't eat much, lose weight" duh!)
sleeplessness
a couple of nights of sweating (didn't help that on those paticular
nights it was humid)
anxiety and depression
loss of energy
Sunburned (mowed the yard one day with a tank top on, shouldn't have
done that)
Today is my last day of the medicine, I feel the infection has
subsided so we'll see. looking back, I think I should have taken this
medication with food or something. I was told not to take this
medication with any dairy products at least 2 hours before and 2 hours
later from taking this medication. So I just went ahead and took the
medication without food altogether.

My mom was prescribed Levaquin (500 mg) for a UTI. She experienced
many of the side effects already mentioned - rashes with blisters on
her cheeks, nausea, dizziness, feeling weak, muscle aches, back ache,
low blood pressure, heart palpitations, sleeplessness.
We're just waiting for this nasty stuff to clear out of her body.
We will now check for adverse side effects before taking future
medications.

I can't believe I am reading all these side effects. I only had one
problem and I am not sure if it has anything to do with Levaquin. I
was in the sun for a few hours and I burned my nose, arms and feet. I
was the only one that had a problem with the sun that day. The sunburn
was a little blistery so I thought it was some type of sun poisoning.
I was OK in a few days. Other then that I had absolutely no side
effects. I was on vacation in Italy at the time I took the medication
so thankfully I was great. I only took 6 500mg tablets because my
pharmacy short changed me one. Maybe it was a good thing.

I was prescribed Levaquin 500 mg for an infected wound on my elbow.
The infection did decrease but didn't actually clear up and the drug
affected my intestines causing inflammation and slight bleeding.
The effect on my joints had me hobbling around like an old man, unable
to walk properly and stairs were agony to climb.
Within 24 hours of finishing the course I felt much improved and today
I feel better still.
Verdict; Erythromycin from now on.

Was given Levaquin on May 16. Within days was unable to walk due to
severe joint and tendon pain. As of today I can walk but only assisted
with a cane. Prior to this antibiotic I was an active 36 year old
mother but now have been reduced to being the grandmother!

I was put on Levaquin for a infection in my uteris. The first hour I
took it I felt like I had the flu and then as the days passed I was
gassy, stomach ache, diarrhea, headache, confusion and started hearing
voices. On day 4 I didn't take my meds and called my doctor. I still
heard voices the next day and here it is 3 days later I'm still having
stomach problems and diarrhea. No voices but the confusion is still
lingering. I have never had a problem with any medication. Never a
single side affect until Levaquin.

I was prescribed Levaquin 750mg tablets, for an UTI for 7 days, wow I
thought I was going crazy, nightmares, anxiety, depression, headaches,
just felt really bad. I totally agree this drug should be taken off
the market, it is dangerous. It affected me in so many ways. I will
never take it again.

I was diagnosed with a uti and a kidney infection. I started taking
the medicine known as Levaquin. I fell sick and nauseated and this is
only the third day. I called the pharmacy and they told me it was a
normal side effect! I feel tired all the time and can not seem to do
my normal day to day things. I first thougt it was the infection now I
believe it is the medication. This is the first time I have taken it
and my doctor stated that it was a good antiobiotic. Well we will see.

Thank God I found this site also! I thought maybe I was crazy! I have
been taking Levaquin only a few days. I take it with dinner thinking
it would help ward off side effects-yeah right. I feel very "drugged"
about an hour after I take it, like I can't wake up for anything, but
then I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep!
I aslo have been very achy in the legs and back and thought something
was really wrong. Thanks to all who posted their expeiences, at least
I know I am not crazy and I will not be taking the last 2 doses! Oh, I
also have that metal taste-yuck! Good Luck and Health to everyone!

I'm so relieved to find this site! I was starting to think I was
overreacting. I'm taking 500mg of Levaquin for a bladder infection and
have had the most bizarre dreams that is if I actually sleep, woke up
yesterday with the oddest rash all along my chin (several very tiny
water bisters & bumps) Besides the fact that it doesn't feel as though
it's helping the infection as I'm experiencing just as much pain as I
was on day one. I've never had a problem with side effects of any drug
so to me this is bit scary. My own prescription No more Levaquin and a
few words with my doctor.

I was told I had a sinus infection and given Levaquin-550mg and was to
take them for ten days. The first day I became ill from a nausea
attack. I took some tagament and got some relief. In the AM I woke up
with hand pain. I took the pill again for the second time and about
two hours later I began sufferring from nausea and chills..After
reading the posts involving this drug I am getting off ASAP and hoping
for the best. Thanks for taking the time and putting your individual
incidents on line..

I was given Levaquin for a skin infection. I started taking it 3 weeks
ago and I have a prescription to get a refill now. For the last 3
weeks I have been extremely tired, short of breath (so much so that I
went to the emergency room a few days ago), aches in my shoulders and
neck, sleeplessness, and pain in my joints and lower back. I didn't
know what could be causing this as I am in good health otherwise. My
doctor just sent me through a lot of blood test and xrays, trying to
find out why I'm feeling so bad all the time. Since I have read the
other testimonies, I know what is wrong. Thank you so much for sharing
your information. I thought that I was truely sick. I will stop taking
this medication immediately.

I went to the doctor earlier this week with cold/flu like symptoms,
and the doctor prescribed levaquin. I then began to feel very sore in
my neck and shoulders, and became very nauseous. I decided to see what
would happen if I skipped one dose a few nights back. The result was
waking up and feeling great. So, just to be sure, I took a dose of
Levaquin when I got to work this morning...and, during lunch, I ran to
the bathroom and "got rid of lunch"...and the achiness has also
returned. Needless to say, I will not be taking it any longer, and the
remaining pills in the bottle will soon find the same path that my
lunch did.

I was prescribed Levaquin for sever Sinusitus. Almost one hour after
the 2nd dose I began experiencing tightness in my chest that became
progressively worse. At the 1.5 hour mark on day 2 I was in
anaphylactic shock and had to be taken to the ER in an ambulance.
I am 41 years old and have know of an allergy to both Penicillin (from
age 2) and Quibron (from age 15). I was saved with multiple doses of
benadryl, adrenaline and another med I cannot remember.

I was on Levaquin 2 years & Tequin 6 months for prostate infection.
Off several months and on Levaquin 1 week late January 2003. Had
doctor's treatment on a Hako Pain Machine (like giant TENS unit) and
afterwards had tingling & walking-on-springs feeling in right foot.
Later felt like I was vibrating in the crotch. Week later had
tingling/vibrating all over my body. In legs/feet most of the time but
other times all over. It can be terrifying. Local doctors no help so
went to Mayo Clinic where diagnosed "small fiber neuropathy" and
"diffuse vibratory sensation". I KNOW this is result of the
fluoroquinolones. Drugs I have been on either don't work or give side
effects too much to tolerate. Doctors I've seen feel it "may" be
result of the antibiotics. I am trying low carbohydrate diet and
absolutely no sugar as that triggers the vibrating sensation bigtime.
So far I have not found anyone with quite similar symptoms to mine.

It has been 3 months since I took levaquin. I took it after my TURP. I
had anxiety, spaced out feeling, shortness of breath, vision problems,
dizziness, irratibility. Also, I noticed in the recovery room that
after taking it my lungs hurt with the least bit of exertion. And now,
after 3 months, my lungs still hurt with very little exertion. I feel
there has been permanent damage to my lungs. Why is levaquin being
used when there are other drugs, that have passed the test of time,
available.

I have been sick for two months now after taking Levaquin. All of my

better but I am worried that I will never be the same. I am interested
in taking legal action. Would anyone be interested? ablondon@aol.com

I was relieved to see other peoples side effects. I thought I was just
losing my mind. Since I started on levaquin, 1st time about a month
ago, and currently finishing a script, I have been experiencing severe
pain in all my joints upon awakening in the morning. I live on the
second floor and to get out I feel and look like Frankenstein getting
down the stairs. My achilles, knees, hips, shoulders and neck are most
affected. The pain does seem to subside somewhat during the day, but
believe me I am still in a state of moderate discomfort. I called my
MD and he said he had never heard of such a thing and to finish the
RX. If I am still uncomfortable in 2 weeks he wants me to call him so
he can do a blood test to check for rheumatoid arthritis. Again thanx
to all who have taken the time to write out their troubles related to
levaquin therapy, now I don't feel alone or crazy. best luck and quick
healing to all affected by this antibiotic.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with Levaquin, but I started
taking it a week ago for a bladder infection. And I have not been able
to sleep, and I've been having weird dreams. Also, I was due for my
period a coupld of days ago and have not yet had it. Not only that,
but my bladder infection has not gone away and I am still in pain.

Ok, here goes! I've waited to enter this until I left the levaquin
nightmare. This drug made my life miserable for three months. Iam a
very healthy active person even ran a marathon in Novemember. I was
prescribed levaquin for a lung infection in February. Was prescribed
500 mg for a week. When I started taking the drug I had very bad neck
spasms but just assummed the drug was ridding me of infection. The
full effects of the drug became more evident towards the end of
treatment.
I was extremely tired, sleepy, very weak muscles hardly able to push
the gas peddle without feeling weak. The thought of walking to the
mail box was overwhelming. I had internal chills and shivering, muscle
aches, muscle spasms and muscle twitching and just felt dreadful. This
went on for about three months. I am still not myself but I think I am
on the road to recovery. I was told by my doctor that I had
neurotoxicity to levaquin. I cannot tell you how much money and agony
this has caused me. I was also referred to a rheumatologist, and a
neurologist to rule out other diseases.I went to a naturopath, my
obgyn, my dermatologist (
weird skin things) I worried like crazy that I would never be the same
all because of an antibiotic. This drug should be taken off the market
immediately. Good luck to all of you who are suffering. I have things
that seemed to help me but I think time is the only cure.

I have been on Levaquin for a UTI (infection of prostate) for over 2
months, and until I found this website I thought I had early stage
cancer. I am a very active person, who now has tendonitis so bad in my
shoulders, elbows and hips that I can barely move. I also have flu
like symptoms and have problems sleeping. I have just called my
urologist and now have an appointment.
Hopefully I can get off this drug and return to a normal life. Thank
you all for your comments.

really wrong with me-headaches, tiredness, feeling generally spaced
out, vision problems, not sleeping-I felt good this AM and then took
my dose and same exact thing-I'm not taking the rest of my doses and
just called my doctor to complain-this is a terrible anitibiotic-get
it off the market-NOW

My husband had a 102 degree fever after taking Zithromax for 5 days.
We went to an immediate care facility where the young medic sent us to
the emergency room for a chest X-ray. He prescribed this awful drug.
The side affects include the nasty metal taste, extreme exhaustion,
trembling, nightmares, cold sweats and now, on day 10, thrush with
swollen tongue and feeling just plain horrible. It is outrageous that
drug companies are allowed to promote their new products without
regard to the consequences. My husband has other really significant
health problems and 1 year ago finished radiation therapy. He did not
need this exposure to a toxic drug! Plus it has not cleared up his
respiratory infection. If his symptoms from this drug remain long
term, I will certainly persue this legally.
I agree with the statement that another poster listed below:
"Pharmaceutical companies are out of control, pushing new and
expensive medications on doctors and then onto unsuspecting patients."
A curse on the drug companies!

I experienced drowziness and dizziness. I also had hot flashes and
bouts of anger. I am a mother of a 4-1/2 month old baby and have never
felt impatient towards him, but felt that way taking this stupid drug.
I lost my car key, put out clothes for work the night before and
forgot I did that, put my son's bottles in the freezer....and the list
goes on. I was at the end stages of a sinus infection. All I needed
was some freaking amoxicillin.

Mon, 19 May 2003 11:18:28 -0400 by Guest, #2384
WHAT THE HELL?! Whatever happened to Amoxicillan? A simple UTI and I'm
a complete freakazoid. Nightmares, short of breath - sighing all the
time. I thought I was just getting stressed. Hand tremors. Muscle
behind my knee just plain hurt but I thought I pulled something
working out. I took it for 9 out of the 14 days prescribed but when I
had a complete emotional meltdown over something stupid - I decided to
stop. I'm still short of breath and my lungs hurt and it feels like I
have a lump in my throat. More than anything I'm pissed.

The first two - three days on Levaquin, I experienced nausea and a
spaced out brain.
Days four - ten (last day of medicine), I turned into the mom on
Requeim for a Dream - not really that extreme but comparable. I felt
like I was on speed, not an antiobiotic. I would lay in bed until
about 3am, nightly. I kept thinking the next night I would be
exhausted and fall asleep quickly since I had little to no sleep the
prior nights, but this was never the case. I started getting worried
daily, and randomly thought maybe I should see a counselor but did not
attribute this to levaquin. I went running one days as normal. Usually
I can run one-two miles without stopping. While on Levaquin I turned
into a super runner, running 3-4 miles without stopping that is while
getting no rest at night. I found this to be strange. I would have
discontinued the medicine, but I have had reoccurning bouts of strep
due to stopping my antiobiotics early; i didn't want a similar effect
so I stuck with the drug.
Now that I am off the drug, I feel sleepy. i have had some random
dreams, but that is fairly normal. After reading everyone's postings,
I am a little concerned if more madness is yet to come. I would
recommend anyone currently on the medicine to change drugs. I am still
confused as to how an antiobiotic is able to have so many terrible
side effects.

I was given Levaquin for Pneumonia at the local ER. I have taken it
four days and will stop today. On the third day, the skin on my upper
body became very sore to the touch, my hands felt swollen and I had
nonspecific upper body pain. On day four, my hands began hurt in the
joints. I've also had really weird dreams, fatigue, and reduced
ability to focus. I will ask my GP for some other type of antibiotic.
I'm very healthy and have not taken an antibiotic in years.

I have taken three 500mg doses and have experienced a rash(Like Poison
Ivy) on my face as a result. I am taking Toporol XL100mg and Lipitor
20mg also. However, these have never caused any problems. The Leviquin
was for other infection Sinus/Kidney related. The infection seems much
better but I will have to change to another antibiotic. I seem to be
one of very few people that break out in rash.

I was prescribed Levaquin for a sinus infection, immediately upon
taking 2 pills twice per day, for 15 days, symptoms included: muscle
aches, uncomfortable fatigue, tingling all over, vomiting in the
morning, loose stools, and weight loss. Finally went to the emergency
room, but it was not until 3 months later (symptoms persisted after
stopping Levaquin) that I was diagnosed with Mono (Jan. 2003), so I am
assuming the sinus problems was brought on by EPV. However, I am still
not sure if the extreme muscle aches were from the virus or the
antibiotics. But, I will not take them again.

Life just seems to be getting more complicated from Levaquin. I have
been off of it for two weeks (since my ER visit). The muscle aches
were subsiding but after only moderate exercise they flare up again.
Then I came down with a case of "thrush" in my mouth and throat and
now have an infection in my chest. In the time since I began the
levaquin I have only had three or four days when I felt somewhat
"normal". And I only took it for five days! I am convinced that this
drug has crossed some wires in my system and I am struggeling to find
out how to get better. I have a good doctor but she is busy just
treating the new symptoms that keep popping up. I am (or have been) a
very healthy active 53 year old woman. I live near the canyons and
mountains and spend much of my time doing wilderness hiking. Now I can
barely hike up the driveway. I am also interested if any action is
being pursued about this drug. If so I would like to know.

I was put on levaquin 5oomg for three weeks to treat epidimitis. After
10 days my joints in my shoulder and rotator cups were painfully
tight. Since I was a regular visitor to the gym I thought perhaps I
was sore due to my workouts. But following my discontinued use, my
joint pain has ceded. However, I have been dealing with abdominal pain
in my large intestine area. The pain has been a dilemma for me for
over six month’s now- I am looking to the day I can return back to
normal. The greatest frustration is that doctor’s have not been able
to id the cause of my abdominal pain. My only way to deal with the
pain is to take 3 garlic capsules twice a day.

On April 15 I was prescribed Levaquin for a UTI infection following
the insertion of a stent to treat a kidney stone. For the previous six
months, I'd been doing daily a workout for my knees, which I'd
discontinued for ten days because the stent had become so
uncomfortable. On April 17, two days after I started taking the
Levaquin, I resumed my workout, only at a diminished level of
intensity to take into accout the ten-day hiatus from exercising. The
following day my knees hurt so badly I could barely walk. I began
experiencing intense depression, anxiety, and sleeplessness (I've
always been a world-class sleeper, so this genuinely freaked me out),
and incredible fatigue. I took the Levaquin, I believe, for a week or
so. Since that time, I've experienced joint pains in my shoulders,
ankles, and hands, as well as pain in the sternum and in my neck and
lower back. I've had similar pains in the past so I don't know if
these can be attributed to the Levaquin, but I hadn't had them in many
months. Three weeks after discontinuing the Levaquin I'm feeling
somewhat better -- I've been able to sleep relatively well, feel less
depressed, and much less fatigued (though it comes over me once in a
while).

My mother, age 73, has always been in excellent health. She was
prescribed Levaquin for an upper respiratory infection. She
immediately became nauseous and slept all day. She is the type of
person who barely gets nauseous with stomach flu. Within 3 days of
taking the Levaquin she began to have tremors. She can no longer write
legibly. Her entire upper body and voice quiver constantly. Her legs
feel week and quiver "from the inside" and she has no energy. She took
the Levaquin for only 5 days. She stopped over a month ago and still
has tremors and lack of energy. I don't believe people are being
warned of the possible side effects of this drug.

Took a 10 day course of levaquin 1 year ago- ok. Took a 10 day cours
for acute bronchitis, and needed another course when symptoms
reappeared 2 days later. Second day into second course developed tiny
hives head to toe. Doctor prescribed antihistamine treatment. 10 days
later still itching and breaking out with tiny hives that scab over
and itch like crazy. Will this ever end? This bites!

Began Levaquin for prostatitis, a result of unknown infection in the
past, that has reoccured roughly once a year for about 7.5 yrs.
Results are excellent, and healed a tooth that had seemed destined to
be removed, and this after just 5 days. However, I have had difficult
dreams, pain and burning in bladder area, and lower back, prespiration
and hot/cold feelings. I am a 63 yr old male, and in the past was
given a regimen of Cipro, which produced no effects other than cure,
but I took it for a month to produce the cure. I am to take three more
doses, and will do them, but hesitate to say I would do it in the
future, and will look for yet another regimen if needed. By the way,
my health is excellent,(inc. prostate) other than this damn curse..and
also, the Levaquin was free samples.....
Good luck to you all.

This bites!

vivid nightmares...have never had nightmares before. The dreams seem
so real, I also have metallic taste in mouth.

Was on levaquin 10 days for diverticulitis. Had vertigo,
joint & muscle pain, drowsiness & noted pieces of what appeared to be
tissue paper-like membrane in my stool. Last dose was 3 days ago,
joint & muscle pain still severe, still have the bowel sideceffect.
The vertigo has disappeared.

After taking the last of my 14 doses of Levaquin (500 mg) 5 days ago,
I still feel intense waves of dizziness and nausea. The headaches come
and go, and the full-body itching is beginning to fade. Notice I say
"beginning."
During my 14-day course of Levaquin, I also experienced an inability
to concentrate, and a sensitivity to both light and sound. Thankfully,
my ability to sleep has come back.
I reccommend that anyone prescribed with this drug consult their
physician as to whether there is a viable alternative, because
(although not everyone experiences them), the side effects can be
long-lasting and debilitating at times.

I took Levaquin for five days in early April as a preventative after
minor surgery. I had been prescribed a 7 day course, but stopped after
I suspected the side effects were from the Levaquin. It all began with
a low grade fever, then extreme anxiety, mental confusion, depression,
intestinal gas, loss of appetite, weakness, sweating, heart
palpitations, and scariest of all, central nervous system
disturbances, strange currents in my left arm and leg, twitches,
shaking, jitters and vision problems. I was the most scared I have
ever been in my life. I went to my GP and he told me it was
"self-perpetuated" because the half life of the drug had passed and
the effects should have subsided quickly. (But he was surprised to see
my liver enzymes were elevated even after the drug was supposed to
have left my body...hmmm.) Well, I was in pure hell for almost three
weeks after stopping the drug, desperately wanting to get better, but
it had a grip on me that only someone who has experienced it can
understand.
I went to a psychiatrist and a neurologist. Both told me it could have
something to do with the GABA receptors in the brain. My biggest fear
was that it had caused permanent harm. Well, I'm happy to report that
now a month and a half later, I feel like myself again. It was a
gradual improvement, but it finally subsided at the end of the third
week.
I just wanted to share my story in case there is someone who is as
worried as I was a month ago, seeking comfort in this forum. (There is
not much comfort, I know.) But although everyone is different and the
side-effects run the gamut, at least it seems to go away in time for
most people. Of course I'm not completely sure that there was no
permanent damage...but I feel pretty confident that my body got rid of
this poison. My liver enzymes went back to normal as well.
I feel each of us must report everything Levaquin has done to us to
Medwatch (the FDA), to our doctors (although they will probably doubt
you), and to anyone you care about in case they are ever given this
over-prescribed time-bomb. Levaquin is a life saving drug, but it
should only be prescribed for people in dire need. It is being
marketed to doctors as a preventative and for minor infections, and
that is where the real problem is. Ortho-McNeil knows more than they
tell the doctors, I'm convinced. There are just too many of us.
Imagine all the people who never figure out that the Levaquin caused
thier ailments! Or they believe thier doctors who say "It's all in
your head."
I hope my story has been of help...and to all who suffer...hang in
there. It takes time, but chances are it WILL go away.

I received a 14 day course of Levaquin to treat a severe Pelvic
Inflammatory Disease as a result of a forgotten Tampon on the 14th
April.
I am 48 not had to take any form of medication for over 10 years, I go
to the gym at least 3 times a week, never suffered from depression.
The past 2 weeks I have suffered Anxiety, Mental Confusion, eyesight
deterioration, and recently bouts of extreme depression. Thought I
would investigate in case it was a side effect of the Levaquin, I am
now worried if this will get worse...........It did knock out the
infection however but at what cost and could I have been given
something else???

At the beginning I had no effects. But then by the seventh, I had bad
nausea, headaches, joint pain in both of my knee caps, sleeping
problems, weakness, sweats, bad dreams, fever, severe stomach
cramping.
In my opinion, this drug should be completely taken off the market. It
not only affects you, but the ones you love too.
If I don't feel better once I stop the medication, I will seek legal
counsel.

I was perscribed Levaquin 500mg at the ER for what was thought to be
an infection caued by a cortisone shot. Had a 101.5 fever.
After the second dose, I experienced swelling and tendonitis in both
feet. Consulted my family phisician and stopped the Levaquin.
All swelling and tendon symptoms disappeared with 24 hours.

Was prescribed Levaquin 500mg by an ER Doctor that could not
definatively find the cause of a high fever (103.5). After 3 days on
the pills I had to investigate the numerous side effects that I
thought I was experiencing. This web site confirmed that they were
indeed side effects. They included, insomnia, anxietyconfusion, loss
of focusconcentration, depressionmood swings, intestinal gas, loss of
appetite, weakness, sweating, and labored breathing. I am glad I
stopped taking the pill before full 10 days. It's been 4 days since
the last dose, and the side effects have finally passed. Good luck to
all taking this evil drug.

I was prescribed Levaquin 500 mg. once a day for 14 days to treat
sinusitus, etc. My joint pain and swelling is so severe I cannot
function in a normal manner. I am an extremely active woman very much
into physical activity and exercise. After the slightest exertion, I
am crippled with pain in my joints and stiffness for days. The
exhaustion is debilitating. I have been off the medication for a week.
I WAS NOT TOLD TO THESE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS. I WOULD CAUTION ANYONE
BEFORE TAKING THIS DRUG.

Background on my self:
1- Never had an alcoholic drink in my life (religious reasons)
2- I suffer from Crohn's disease (bowel disease)
3- I smoke cigarettes (a pack a day)
I've been taking Levaquin for the past 21 days days (500 mg/day)
Side effects: minor pain in right rist joint, minor headache
My doctor prescribed the pain killer Oxicodone (5mg) to be taken when
needed every four hours.
I take my Levaquin in the morning with a cracker or some white bread
along with the oxicodone pill.
Conclusion: I'm almost side-effect free!!

Hello Everyone, sorry to here that so many of us have had such a bad
reaction to this medication. Well, I'm on day 4 of a 14 day supply of
Levaquin. I noticed on day 3 of taking this medication I have notice a
painless swollen node behind my left ear and this morning I felt what
could be another appearing almost vertically from the first one. I
have read through the side affects over and over again, and the
pharmacist script never mentioned anything about swollen lymph glands.
My question is, has any had a problem with painless swollen lymph
nodes if so, where did you find them?

It is hard to decide what is really happening.
Cold autoimmune hemolytic anaemia, ITP
IgG and IgM attack normal blood cells.
Liver and Spleen Hyperactivity due to damaged blood cells.
Combination of Pneumovirus, exposure to extreme cold, and
Fluoroquinalone drug used for treatment.
Suspect Hospital cold drinks and Ice cream continue to exacberate.
Reaction with Ciprofloxacin treatment for ear infection. Nov 2001.
First episode.
Jan 2002 repeat after 1 useage of CiPro in combination with
Cortisteroid. landed in hospital cramps and CAIHA.
recovered and went north. -35C and ear drops. Clotting and CAIHA.
counts down. Severe pulmonary emolism. Sever -Cramping in legs hands
and chest.
This was my first experience with fluroquinalone drugs and doctor
prescribed Levaquin three times afterwards have put me in hospital
with repeat symptoms. Hemoglobulin counts 60-64.
Suspect that in certain persons Quinolone drugs react on autoimmune
system to produce antigens against self.
This is probably an autoimmune condition that is pre-exisiting and in
combination with the drug the autoimmune system overreacts.

I took Levaquin from May 1, 02 until July 19,02 for an infected hip
prothesis. I developed severe pain in my fingers, knuckles, hands,
shoulders and TMJ joints. The Dr. said it would go away. As of May 9,
03 I still have the problem and am seeing a rheumatologist. He,
through blood test said I have ANCA Positive vasculitis which is
caused from taking Levaquin. The course of treatment is steroids. I
took steroids and the raised havoic with me, and only made matters
worse. His next course of action is massive doses of steroids. IV
therapy for three days followed by 100, yes 100 days of taking 15 mg
prednisone daily. He treated his only other patient with ANCA Positive
and it did not work.
I'm currently waiting to get in to Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic or
University of Michigan Medical Center.
My question to anyone out here is if there is a class action law suit
going against the manufacturer of Levaquin.

I am a 21 year old female who ended up in the hospital for a kidney
infection. The Dr. there prescribed me Levaquin which I have bben
taking for almost five days now. I thought I was CRAZY, untill I found
this site. I have had the worst headache and neck pain since I have
started this drug. Not to mention it feels like my sight is al messed
up. Lights seem brighter, which only makes me more dizzy, but I would
have to say the worst would be the fact that I can not sleep. I can
lay there forever and be dead tired and still not fall asleep. But
when I do fall asleep finally there are the weird dreams. I can't even
explain them. My family thinks I am paranoid and that I worry to much,
but after reading this I know that it is the levaquin. I have no
health insurance and the pills were samples that cost me nothing so I
am afraid if I complain to the doctor that he will prescribe me
something I can't pay for. I thought that the kidney infection was bad
but it is nothing compared to the way I feel now.

of all the infection my doc put me on eight days of Levaquin. Before I

hour each day. After two doses of Levaquin, I am lucky to get out of
bed each morning but after getting my kids to school, I back in bed. I
am so tired. My feet are cold. I take vitamins and iron. After reading
this site, I am not taking the last two Levaquin tabs. Good luch and

I'm a 58 year old male in good health. Was riding a bike 5 to 6 miles
each day and no problems or arthritis. In January I got a Urinary
tract infection and was put on a Sulfa drug which gave me a rash so I
was switched to Levaquin.
Started taking Levaquin 24 Feb.
Started having lower back pain and heat in two days.
28 Feb went to Physical therapist to see if she could do something for
the pain and the heat in lower back. She could not find anything wrong
and sent me back to my Doctor. He checked me out and said the
infection was gone and not to lift anything over 10 lbs.
1 Mar. pain almost unbearable.
2 Mar. by evening could not control my back and was laying on the
floor.
3 Mar called doctor and told him I couldn't get out of bed and he
called in a prescription for a muscle relaxant and recommended heat
and ice. Called my therapist and she recommended ice 20 min every hour
and to come in as soon as I could get out of bed.
5 Mar finally able to get out of bed and went to therapy.
6 Mar took last Levaquin.
Continued therapy and things seemed to be getting better but kept
injuring joints when I used them too much.
Since then it has been all downhill. Symptoms include aching in all
joints. Unable to sit or lay on my back. Anytime anything touches my
back it gets hot. One Rib has gone out of place twice. My back
continues to go out of control. Unable to sleep due to the pain. Knees
weak. Sometimes have hot spots on legs and arms. Doctor has taken
blood tests and had Xrays thinking I had Arthritis which isn't the
case. Any physical exertion compounds problems. Had to quit therapy as
it causes more pain. Doctor has me on muscle relaxants, Vioxx and pain
killers. He doesn't believe this ailment was caused by Levaquin or if
it was the effects would already be gone.
It's over two months since I took the drug and no relief. Seems to get
worse every day. Tried to go to a Neurologist and he needed me to have
a MRI and so far the insurance company has denied it.
Tried going to a Chiropractor but any manipulations cause more pain.
If anybody has suggestion on how to get over this and back to a normal
life please let me know.

I have taken Levaquin over the past three years for stubborn and
recurring sinus infections. Although I was seriously ill with the
infections (fever of 104) I have finally refused to take the
antiobiotic despite the fact that it is quite effective in the
treatment of the infection. The side effects are simply too
debilitating. Each time I was taking the Levaquin, I suffered from
tinitis, sleeplessness, extreme photophobia, and mild digestive upset.
But it was the severe arthritis-like symptoms that crippled me for
well over a month after discontinuing the antibiotic that finally
forced me to seek other antibiotic therapy. The joint related symptoms
were so serious, in fact, that I was misdiagnosed as having rheumatoid
arthritis after my first use of Levaquin. I was prescribed plaquinil
for the arthritis, but fortunately my pharmacist informed me of the
possible side-effects of Levaquin and I never started arthritis
therapy. Although the joint-related side effects diminish in time, I
do not feel that I have ever fully regained my flexability or range of
motion, nor have I been completely pain-free since using Levaquin.

I was put on Levaquin (500mg / day) for chronic prostititis. My doctor
prescribed a 60 day supply / treatment. I am currently on day 56. A
couple of times during the treatment, I noticed some minor, abnormal
muscle pains in shoulders / upper arms / legs, with general weakness.
When I informed the doctor, his nurse said that that is one of the
side effects and it will go away after I am off the medication.
Yesterday I spent all morning doing yardwork. Perhaps sun sensitivity
or allergies have added to the side effects, but I have been in more
pain today then ever. I just came across this website today. I hope to
report back soon that the side effects do indeed lessen over time. But
reading some of these posts concern me. Stay tuned.

I started taking Levaquin for 14 days for a culture they did of my
nose which indicated a bacteria. After taking for eight days, I began
shuffling my feet and could hardly walk. At work I walked very slow,
which is not normal for me and I could not bend down. My kees and
ankles hurt so bad I could hardly stand it. I asked the nurse about it
when I went in for my allergy shot, as I thought it was the shot. She
said no it was not the shot but the antiobiotic. I ignored the fact as
I had never heard of that happening and the side effects weren't
listed from the pharmacy receipt. I took Ascription and Ultram at the
same time it hurt so bad.
I still have infection and called the Dr's office again and they gave
me the same thing. When I went to pick it up, I asked to talk to the
pharmacist and told him about the side effects I experience and he
said they don't give the medication to anyone under 18 years of age
because of tendon and ligament damage. He told me to take it easy
while I am on it. I've decided I'm not taking it. I'll have to risk my
infection.

I have excruciating pain in my left shoulder while taking Levaquin; a

One thing that has helped me is Theraflu- NOT Ibuprofen- as many of us
might think.

What an awful day! I went to ER thinking I was having a heart attack
because of the severe pain in my chest, neck and expecially right arm.
After all the testing they sent me home saying it "might" be a
reaction to the Levaquin I have been taking for five days (for a colon
infection). I was convinced it was the levaquin since I am a very
healthy 50 year old woman, hiker, runner ,ect and I have not taken an
anitbiotic for over five years (for a tooth problem). Now all of a
sudden I have this horrible aching and pain in my upper body. Needless
to say, I am getting off the drug and will pursue this with my doctor
on Monday. After reading all of this, I am hoping that the symptoms
will leave and not cause permanent damage. I willalso contact the FDC
and drug company. Thank all of you for writing this or I would have
not known what happened to me.

Hello. I want to warn everyone who takes Levaquin to be extra
careful.( This is my third post here. )After taking just 8 Doses of
Levaquin last month. I now am under Doctor care for the side effects.
I am on Vicodin for pain .(which does not help much) I have to get
blood work done every week ,Sometimes twice a week. My Doctor is
talking about putting me in the Hospital if things do not get better.
I will need IV Fluid for dehydration, I now need to see an ortho
doctor for my hips , legs, and feet and shoulder. I used to walk all
the time. and now just riding to the store ,I come home and take a
nap. I can not go anywhere by myself. My mood swings are horrible and
I get depressed so much easier now. I wish everyone luck . You all are

I took two series of Zithromax for a bronchial infection. It seemed to
do nothing, so I asked the doctor for Levaquin which was recommended
by someone else.
I have only taken it for two days. I have had a metallic taste in my

I have been taking Levaquin since Tuesday for a UTI and I have been
having the WORST stomach cramps, bloating and excessive gas. At first
I thought it was something I ate, since we have been barbequeing a lot
but now that I read this page I'm convinced it's the medicine. I feel
like I've eaten 3 cans of beans, broccoli and onions mixed together,
that's how bad my stomach hurts. It feels like it's going to explode.
The only thing that seems to have calmed the pain a bit is Pepcid AC.
I want to ask my doctor to switch me. I'm glad I read this site.

I only had nightmares the first night (of 14). But when you wake up
praying you know it is bad!! Extreme fatigue, nausea and the most
ungodly diareha you can imagine. That part did not start until I had
only four doses to go. I was told to eat lots of yogurt. I told them I
ate yogurt until it came out my ass and it was not helping. Am on a
probiotic now recommended by a friend who had a similar experience. I
would never take this stuff again. It would however make a good weapon
of mass destruction.

Took 28 days of levaquin in summer 2001. Had all the side effects
imaginable. Tingling/numbness, tinnitus, vision problems, cold hands
and feet, metallic taste, hair loss, sun sensitivity, muscle
twitching, and horrible full body pain in tendons, muscles and joints.
Two years later, I have seen some recovery--especially the nervous
system problems. However, the muscular skeletal problems continue to
plague me. They are getting better, but it is VERY SLOW progress. Stay
away from this drug, and if you have any type of reaction, please file
a report directly with the FDA and the drug company.

I was a 52 yr. old healthy female and was diagnosed with pneumonia in
October of 2002. My doctor prescribed 500 mg Levaquin. It did seem to
help with the pneumonia, however while taking it I had the first
anxiety and panic attacks I had ever had. Had bouts of crying. Was
unable to concentrate, and could not sleep. Since that time, my eyes
have been extremely watery and my allergy medication is no help. I am
often achy and as of late I am experiencing pain in my right arm near
the top. I have very little energy,no interest in seeing friends or
doing things I used to enjoy. I have no interest in sex. I think this
drug is very dangerous and should be taken off the market.

I've been taking Levaquin for 2 days now and have experienced all
sorts of issues. Lack of sleep, horrible nightmares (when I finally do
sleep), Rectal bleeding, head pain, nausea, hair loss, vomitting,
memory lapses, vomitting, memory lapses, black feces, dyslexia,
narcistic impulses, hypothermia, sudden urges to watch mtv and a
craving for tea biscuits. Seriously, this medicine is horrible and you
should avoid it at all costs.
