I have been taking Avelox for five days after being diagnossed with pneumonia. I was prescribed other drugs as well and has since stopped taking those because of adverse side affect.Since the Avelox has been my only medication, and I have experienced an array of side affects. I have been having trouble sleeping, vomitting, stomach pains, dry mouth, headaches, muscle fatigue, and other abnormalities that have been a nuisance throughout. I understand medications affect people in a variety of ways, but to cure one problem and create numerous more is ludicrous. Has To Be A Better Way!!!!!!

Ref: guest # 9738. Got a reply from the FDA. They informed me that when I take a drug the results may be good or they may be bad. What do I think. They don't care. Ed

I was prescribed Lavaquin for a reoccuring strep infection. Today is my 7th day on the drug.

Almost immediately upon taking Levaquin I began to feel unusually anxious and depressed. I did not link this to Levaquin, but thought I was experiencing some sort of unusual mood swing. The anxiety and depression continued with the use of the drug, combined with slight nausea and a general feeling of apathy. I took the medication again this morning and thought I might check online and see if there were any strange side effects--my doctor had mentioned that it could cause one "to dream."

I am now wondering if my anxiety and depression--the second being totally unusual for me--can be linked back to using Levaquin. I notice that most side effects mentioned here have to do with muscle and joint pain. My joints feel fine, but my muscles in my back, shoulders and neck are unusally sore and tight--something I'd normally attribute to anxiety.

I was prescribed levaquin for a sinus infection and began to have pain in my calves and ankles the next day. After the second day, the pain was debilitating and involved joints included knees, ankles, hips, shoulders, and back. My dr initially stated this was not a side effect of the drug. I have since learned otherwise. It has been 10 days since I discontinued the med, and I still am unable to do my usual exercises and activities. I had previously been active and am in good shape, but now cannot run ot go up and down steps, and even walking is paiful

I am 35, was in good health, ate right etc. In October of 04, I took levaquin for a bacterial infection that had caused swollen lymph nodes. The infection returned and I was given another round of levaquin after Thankgiving. Around the holiday season, my feet and legs starting hurting (feet hurt, leg muscles ached), left wrist and fingers started hurting, and recently my knees and thigh muscles have begun to hurt. I have been to several doctors, including an infectious disease doctor who ran scores of tests (everything came back negative). He is treating me for TB even though the tests came back negative (a biopsied lymph node indicated an infection). He thinks it is a mycobacterial infection. When I can across this site about levaquin, it was like an epiphany - some here decribed my symptoms to a T. I called my doctor but he said these symptoms were not from levaquin. He wants to put me in steroids for a week to see if that helps the pain. I am able to go to work and function, but running and moving around pain free are not options now. I am ready to return to normal.

Anyone have suggestions for these symptoms? How long does it take for these effects to dissipate? If the pain would go away, I'd be back to normal. This has been going on for a few months now, but I haven't taken levaquin in 1.5 months.

Help!

In Aug I was on levaquin for 4 days and experiencing subtle side effects (nausea, fatigue) until day 4 when i woke up with severe abdominal pain and called 911. I later reread the prescriptions notes and figured it was a side effect from levaquin. But now i am sitting on $15,000 of medical bills because i don't feel the ER physician caught this connections and ran every test possible including 2 CAT scans and an MRI and still never mentioned that it could be a side effect. It seems obvious to me and I am not even a doctor. If anyone else has been to the ER or doctor because of these side effects or if there is a doctor out there that can help me build a case against the physician who I believe missed on diagnosing me correctly and administered several unnecessary exams, I would greatly appreciate it. I need alot of evidence and resources.

I, too, am a recent "victim" of Levoquin. Went to the doctors on January 14th with swollen neck glands and generalized physical weakness. Thought that I had mono but a quick culture revealed a strep infection. A RX was written for Keflex. I insisted on a 24/48 hr. culture and sensitivity. Thirteen days later my doctor phoned me at work (without a doubt I should be looking for another Practice!!) and said that the strep would not respond to Keflex but that it would respond to Levoquin. My lucky day! This was the beginning of the end. So, for the first ten days of this infection I was on Keflex. Then seven days of Levoquin 500 mg. daily. A repeat culture done on February 10th still revealed Strep. Way to go Levoquin! Now I am on a twenty day course of Levoquin 500 mg. daily (the doctor refers to it as a nuclear bomb). No kidding, Dick Tracy! Shoulder pain is unrelenting, joint pains all over, glands are still swollen, throat is swollen, ears ache, do not sleep.... even with the aid of Ambien, AND, my eyelids are scalded. A new side effect for this medication? This is day seven of this round. I don't know if I will make it to day twenty. I am still waiting for a return call from my doctor. Help! How in the world can a medication that causes so much harm be good for you? I would love to see the test study data on product.

It all started on my 9th day of therapy of a 10 day treatment. I woke up and went to work only to get weak in my arms and legs. I had to leave work and my GP said it was the flu. Since Jan.12th and numerous visits to my GP I still am having problems with my arms and legs and have been off work since. Finding a MD that knows of this problem is a very big problem.

Does anyone in the northern KY or southern IN area know of a good doc who can help treat this problem?

Please e-mail me and let me know.

Good luck to all of those who have been devastated by this drug.

I began taking Levaquin about 5 days ago for a sinus infection. I started to have joint pain right away. First my calves and ankles hurt, then the joint problems progressed to my knees, ankles, shoulders, hips, etc to the point my sleep was severely disrupted and daily activities became difficult. When I called to report this to my dr, she denied these problems were a side affect noted in the physician's info. THIS MUST CHANGE! Only the research done by my wonderful husband provided the awareness of this drug'e debilitating side affects, and I insisted I be switched to another antibiotic.

It's Valentine's Day 2005 and I took 750mg Levaquin

for 3 days. My side effects include nausea and my

tongue burning on the tip.

The doc gave me moxifloxacin, another flouoroquinolone

last November before Thanksgiving. I'm worried that

my symptoms: achey hip joints, pain in a neck gland

and now a rash that persists are related to fluoroquinolones.

>I have an appointment with a dermatologist for the rash.

(Glad the Levaquin made me sick, because I couldn't take

my teenager to the Hudson Valley Mall on the day the

Columbine copycat shooter open fired!)

I was given a 500mg tablet before having a prostate biopsy and then I took a second tablet the next day. It was to prevent infection from the biopsy procedure. Within two days after taking the pills I developed severe hives. I had no idea what caused it. I called the pharmacist and was told that it could be a temporary reaction to this drug. I was instructed to take some benadryl. I did and the hives went away within a few hours. Since then I've had a reoccurance of hives three more times (within a week of taking it). It usually happens in the evenings. I'm not sure if there's another factor that's causing it to reoccur or not. I have not taken any further doses of the drug. I can't seem to pin-point any other variable that can be affecting me. Is it still the effects of the Levaquin a week later? I guess I will talk to the pharmacist again tomorrow and see what else they have to say. Hopefully the symptoms won't get any worse and that this will stop soon. I was not given any precautions before taking the drug. I've never had any side affects to other drugs before this one.

I was administered Levaquin for 7 days intervenously in the hospital and sent home with more for 9 additional days. I started having pain above my left thumb, red and swollen and painful. That went away but now I have severe pain in my knees and legs, shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat. After reading all of these side effects for this medication I'm appalled at the doctors. I called my doctor and he said Oh yeah, it's the Levaquin but can you take it for at least 3 more days? NO!!!! And I advise anyone else not to take this medication either.

How do you file a complaint with the FDA?

I'm glad I found this site. I thought I would be in pain forever and like Teri thought I had developed rheumatoid arthritis. I have such terrible pain in my one arm that I thought at first I had broken it. The doctor sent me for x-rays of my shoulder and arm. Nothing found. The pain got worse and traveled to my other arm and then my knees. I can hardly walk and wonder how I am going to go to work tomorrow. I hope you are wrong Teri when you say that it takes a long time for Levaquin to get out of your body. I don't know how long I can take this pain which keeps me awake at night because my arms are so painful. Does anyone know of a way to make it go away quicker?

Side effect of Levaquin - numbness in the back of my brain, loss of balance, mental acuity is terribly effected, loss of appetite, need more sleep, personality changes, numbness of fingers and hands, speech affected, vision affected - I think that I was lucky to be taking benedryl during the time, but was also taking theophylline and aspirin - doctor should never have given me this drug. I should never have swallowed it in the first place. Was 500mg for only 3 days but was enough to make me crazy and I stopped it. Doctor has yet to respond to my complaints and his nurse only offered me another drug - which I refused. I feel like I am living in another time and space - not a normal space. I am keeping the fluids going to try to flush it out of my system. What a raging nightmare this is. I will email anyone who emails me at gypsy899@hotmail.com about this drug.

I am so glad i found this site. I was convinced i was developing severe arthritis at age 39. I was put on a 3 weeks course of levaquin in November to combat a sinus polyps and sinus infections. Shortly after, i started complaining to my husband that i was afraid i was getting arthritis. Had the aches and pains through December and then got another sinus infection in january. Was given another course of levaquin and the 2nd day into it, i awoke with terrible pains in my wrists, knees, ankles and shoulders. I called my doctor and got prescribed another antibiotic. It is now February 7 and the side effects linger including sleeplessness (benadryl can get me to sleep) and dry mouth. My symptons kind of come and go - my joints will feel fine for a couple of days and then randomly the pain returns in my ankle, or hands and feet (sometimes all 3). I wanted to encourage many of you that although this is irritating and uncomfortable, you will get better in time - it is a slow process to get this drug out of your system. I have done lots of research and have found that taking 2 tablespoons of milk of magnesium a day can help clear the poison from your system plus taking acidophilus to restore your healthy bacteria and echenasia goldenseal to restore your immune system. Plus and most importantly drink LOTS of water. I have learned that depending on the severity of your reaction - that getting back to normal can take anywhere from a few months to 2 years (for the most severe reactions) But more than likely, it will be a several months. I am feeling better and the aches are tolerable. I am thankful i figured out it was the levaquin or i might be in really bad shape right now. I have two small kids, work part time and don't have time for this!!! I have also learned that you can take this medication one time and suffer mildy and then the second dose can knock you out - so even if you didn't react severely the first time, i urge you not to take it again. Anyway, i would love to hear from others how long it took to get better. I am 2 weeks into my recovery and feeling hopeful and lots more educated. I will never take meds for granted again. Hope this helps. Blessings........

My wife and I took Levaquin for two days, Thursday and Friday for colds, neither of us slept either night and I urinated every 15 to 20 minutes during the night, and less but more than usual during the day. We didnt take it last night (Saturday) and both slept much better.

Friday and Saturday I experienced sharp pains in my left elbow joints- something I never had before... as well as back pain in my mid back left side. My wife also experienced some discomfort in the right elbow joint, something she never experienced before.

After not sleeping for the first two nights I told my wife we're stopping the drug, my doctor was not available saturday. I came to the internet to see what side effects this drug has- and came across this forum.

HOW CAN WE START A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST THE MAKER OF LEVAQUIN FOR THE PAIN AND SUFFERING THAT IT HAS CAUSED?????????????????????????

I took levaquin over a year ago for the treatment of Lyme disease. I have not been able to have a normal nights sleep since. I am told that I go directly in REM sleep and this is why the dreams are so vivid and unrestful. We need to stop this drug from being on the market. The drug companies think that they can get away with anything to get their drugs out there. Please help us stop them. They are killing us!

Levaquin
I was administered Levaquin in the hospital for 7 days and sent home with more for another 9 days for diviticulitis. I developed a painful swollen red thumb first, then knee and leg pain. Now I am short of breath and bone tired to the point of exhaustin. I called the doctor and he said Oh yeah, it's probably the Levaquin, but can you take it a few more days to make sure the infection is gone? NO! They ought to ban this drug as I see more and more people have the same side effects I do. How do you go about filing a complaint with the FDA? Marie MREESTER@AOL.COM

So grateful for this Forum
My doctor gave me a prescription for Levaquin for chronic bronchitis. She said not to worry about side effects. I remembered that a cousin had taken it a couple of years ago and got terrible tinnitus. I decided to check out the web and found this forum. Now I will never willingly take this drug. Thank you all so muich for sharing your info.
