My 79yr old mother-in-law was given Levaquin at the ER on New Year's Eve for a bronchial infection (?) Her regular DR couldn't see her that day. She has since been in the hospital twice with severe diarrhea. The 1st time it occured x-rays showed an obstruction in her intestine but no mass was found. She was given fluids, a tube down her nose to pump out stomach contents and sent home after 3 days. She began having severe 10-15x daily, diarrhea and was then again admitted to hospital. Her DR keeps saying he thinks Levaquin caused this.

Is this permanent? What can be done now?

Was given a 10 day course of Levaquin for bronchitis. I had to stop on day 7 when the red itchy rash appeared on my hands and legs. Nearly 2 weeks later I can barely use my right hand to grasp or squeeze without experiencing severe pain. Both eyes have been bloodshot and irritated for the same 2 weeks-I assumed it was because I was having difficulty falling and staying asleep for 2 weeks.. The prescribing MD at a local "Quick Care" denies any connection between this drug and my symtoms. Until this episode of bronchitis I have taken no drugs of any sort, haven't even needed to see a doctor in over 2 years-I'm not a hypochondriac, but I'm sick dammit, and it can't be a coincidence that it began with taking Levaquin. I'm in the process of trying to find a physician in my area who is knowledgeable about the side effects of this drug but am having little luck. Anyone familiar with an MD in the Las Vegas area experienced with diagnosing and treating the side effects of Levaquin PLEASE email me at bmr247@yahoo.com.....I don't want to sue anybody, I just want to feel better.

For more info on adverse effects...
It is distressing to see all of the people who have posted here about classic Levaquin adverse reactions and received no replies. I hope that those individuals have found help--although at the moment, there seems to be little more than self-help available to us.

Anyone with a non-life-threatening illness who is taking Levaquin and has begun experiencing new joint/muscle pain or new neurologic symptoms (ranging from abnormal sensations to extreme nervousness to insomnia with no other apparent cause) should stop taking it immediately, no matter what the doc says.

That goes for all the other fluoroquinolone antibiotics as well--Cipro, Avelox, maybe half a dozen other names I don't have handy.

To get a feel for typical adverse reactions and things you might do to help yourself, see Yahoo Groups' Quinolone Adverse Reaction Forum:

Normal, healthy male, 57, with suspected prostrate infection. Prescribed 500MG Levaquin for 30 days. I've used it before over the years for sinus infection (10 day regimen) and it was quite effective, although I had noticed some muscle and tendon soreness. This time, 14 days into it, I'm experiencing severe irritability, and stress. The muscle soreness and joint stiffness are constant, particularly in the feet and hands. I've read a number of postings about accompanying stomach and digestive problems - you must use acidophilus when taking a drug like this - all the beneficial flora in the digestive tract are being destroyed and you have to replace them or you'll get bloating, gas, stomach and intestinal cramping, etc. The mental distress is new for me on this one and it concerns me.
