Subject: Chest pain
Many thanks to all who responded to my inquiry regarding my
husband's bout with chest pain following a two week dose of Cipro.
After reading the responses yesterday, I was able to talk him into
calling the Workers' Comp clinic where he was originally seen for
the burn he sustained at work a few weeks ago. Fortunately, they
took the matter very seriously and scheduled an appointment for him
this morning. He just called me from the ER and said that they had
sent him from the clinic to the hospital for further tests. Could
be nothing. Sure hope so. Again, thanks for the info. Will keep
you posted.

Subject: chest pain update
Well, my husband is spending the night in the hospital. They have
run a barrage of tests including a heart scan and echo, and are
keeping him on monitors overnight. More test scheduled tomorrow.
The doctor at the workers' comp clinic (the one who prescribed the
Cipro) stated categorically that Cipro doesn't cause this kind if
adverse reaction. It has to be a coincinence. I don't think so.
I've spent the afternoon copying anything I can find relating to
adverse cardiac reactions from Cipro. Any other suggestions would
be appreciated.

Thanks Al,
My husband has discontinued the Cipro (but not, unfortunately until after
completing the full two week dose). He's still at the hospital today having
more tests, possibly even an angiogram. I have put together enough info, I
think, to take to the workers' comp doc to make our case. If the burn he
received the Cipro for was work related, then the adverse reaction to the drug
to treat the burn should also be work related. Thanks again. I've added the
copy from the package insert to my file.

Subject: Re: [quinolones] (no subject)
Dear Mr. Fuller:
Thank you for sharing the reply you received from Senator Campbell, as well as
the e-mail addresses of other Legislators to whom I can write. I intend to do
so today.
You may/may not remember me. We lost our 38 year old daughter in May of 2002
--and feel very strongly both the Cipro and Methylprednisolone she was
prescribed contribututed in some way to her sudden and unexpected death. She
had both kidney and liver problems -- and we will always believe she should not
have been given these medications. Unfortunately, we were not aware of any
risks involved in these medications at that time.
Her Primary Care Physician said he did not know what caused her death -- and
indicated she died from Acute Myocardial Infarction - due to Circulatory System
Collapse.
Last hear we wrote to the State of Florida Department of Health ,as well as
the FDA indicating our concerns about these medications -- and voiced our
feelings that stronger wrnings should be issued about these medications. We
feel both Physicians, Pharmacists and the Public should know there ARE risks in
taking Fluroquinolones and Cortisteroids -- and that individuals should be
advised to request a less risky medication wherever possible.
The Florida State Department of Heath contacted us and advised us they are
conducting an investigation to determine IF the Physician wh0 precribed these
medications was in any way negligent. He was aware of our daughter's other
health problems (liver and kidneys) -- and if it is found he was negligent,
then he possibly could be censured, required to take further training, and
submit to the State information to show he is keeping up to date on ADRs from
medications. Thre is NO financial liability for the Physician -- and it was
never our intention to attempt to sue him. In the State of Florida only a
surviving spouse or children of a deceased individual is allowed to sue for
malpractice which resulted in death.
Mr. Fuller, recently I completed a Drug Safety Form on the Internet,
indicating I SUSPECTED our daughter may have had an ADR to these two
medications. Below is an e-mail I received from Mrs. Patricia O'Brien, with
Bayer Company concerning this Drug Safety Information I had provided. She
asked if I would sign a consent form so she could contact our daughter's
Physician, and indicated a Consent Form was attached. The Form was not
included.
Mr. Fuller, my question is this: Since I have already contacted the State of
Florida Department of Health regarding my concerns about these medications, and
they are investigating to determing if there was any negligence on the part of
the Physician, should I give Mrs. O'Brien our daughter's Physician's name?
The Physician involved has already indicated to us that the 'risks' involved in
giving our daughter these medications were 'extremely rare' and that this was
the 'best medication' for the diagnosis of suspected bronchitis or pneumonia.
Would Bayer's reason for wanting his name simply mean they would confirm his
belief the medications were completely safe to give our daughter?
Mr. Fuller, I am writing to ask your opinion insofar as my releasing this
information to Mrs. O'Brien, at the Bay Company. As I said, we only contacted
the State of Florida Department of Health because we are concerned about the
use of Cipro (and other fluroquinolones) and Methyloprednisolone. We have two
other adult children who have Cystic Fibrosia, and recently our 41 year old
daughter had to take Cipro for a pseudomonas infection. She has so many
drug allergies and has built up a resistance to many of the antibiotics, so
Cipro was the drug of last resort to treat this infection. Thank goodness her
C.F. Specialist was aware of the risks of giving her Cipro, and she was
hospitalized and closely monitored while on this drug.Priore to our other
daughter's death, we were not aware of any risks in taking Fluroquinolones, and
I know you can understand our concerns at this time.
We have no litigation against the Physician who prescribed these medications
for our deceased daughter. We simply want to be sure others, are completely
aware of any and all risks with these medications.
Mr. Fuller, thank you so much for all your efforts in drawing attention to
the risks involved in taking Fluroquinolones. You are doing a great job in
'getting the word out', as well as contacting those in authority who may help
pass legislation concerning these medications.
I hve helped, and continue to help, so many by your Fluroquinolones Web Site.
I respect you and trust your opinion very much.
Thank you for any advice you may give me concerning any further contact I
should/should not have with Bayer Company.

Sincerely,
Betty Crawley

(Letter from Mrs. O'Brien - with Bayer Company)

"Dear Ms. Crawley,

Thank you for the Drug Safety Form regarding your daughter's use of Cipro
and methylprednisolone. . The information is important to ongoing monitoring
of Cipro use in the general population. Please know I would like to extend
my sympathies to you and your family.

We would like to obtain your consent to contact your daughter's primary
physician for further follow-up. Any information provided to Bayer Drug Safety
is used to help better understand the events. Please note providing this
information is voluntary and remains totally confidential. Attached is a consent
form to contact the physician. If you would like to review and sign, it can be
returned via regular mail or fax.

It is now almost two months since the above posting was made, and
during that time I looked on the web for something that might help my
mother.

What I found and what she has been taking for about six weeks is
colostrum, and she is markedly improved. She may have improved
without the colostrum so I can't attribute a miraculous recovery to
that particular substance, but the fact remains that she gets around
quite well now and is almost her old self.

I have no interest or affiliation or anything at all to do with
colostrum production, marketing or whatever; I just discovered it and
thought it wouldn't hurt to try it and I post this as nothing more
than an update that may be of interest to others.

Joe K

PS She takes the 480 mg capsule form of New Zealand bovine colostrum
four times daily. Each capsule contains 100% bovine colostrum.

I sent for a Medwatch report yesterday. I intend to fill it out and report my
husband's two day hospital stay from suspected heart complications. He's home
now, but still having symptoms, even after all the tests showed nothing. I'm
still convinced it was the Cipro and plan to accompany him to his appointment
Monday with the Workers' Comp doc who prescribed the Cipro. I'm going armed
with pages of evidence of cardiovascular involvement and adverse reactions from
this drug. Wish us luck.

Subject: new to this site but now aware of why I have problems!!
The info on this site has opened my eyes to the damage done to me by
the fluoroquinolones. I have been treated for Lyme disease and RA
with antibiotics. Since taking several courses of cipro and one
course of levaquin, my tendons and muscles have NEVER been the same.
I have pain constantly and always tell the doctors that it is mainly
in my tendons and muscles. I was once a strong, healthy person, as I
am sure many of you were before exposure to these dangerous drugs.
There isn't much to be done except trying to maintain the best health
possible through diet and detoxification. I have recently had
treatments with a machine called an Ioncleanse..a foot bath that is
supposed to help with detoxification. My skepticism was high for the
first "bath" but the difference I felt was remarkable. SO am
continuing with these treatments. I will also be visiting a doctor
well known for his work and writings about heavy metal detoxification
and mercury poisoning. His work and plan for patients like me
includes nutrtional support (through IV and other methods),
detoxification and addressing the infections. Maybe his methods will
help the FQ damage...I would like to have that hope. I will certainly
bring it to his attention. I am appalled, but not surprised, by the
lack of information about these horrendous drugs! Profits for the
pharmaceutical companies drives this system...Thanks for all the
information that I have found on this site and also for help in
finding other sites. Mary

Subject: Re: [quinolones]
This is an excellent question. It took at least 2 yrs to get a nerve
conduction test done and before that I had 2 blood flow studies
(A***ole dr kept insisting it was a circulation problem even tho
there was no evidence or symptoms consistant therewith) And a yr or
more to get seen by an orthopedists which was a real waste of my time
and money and the orthopedists' too. Took him 2 minutes to tell
me "Why did he send you to an orthopedist? You have no orthopedic
problem here" And my now EX doctor was STILL wnating to send me to an
orthopedists. Only this time it was a sports injury ortho! Uneducated
Cockroach!

My sense is , and this is based on the fact that after 4.5 yrs I am
still alive and functioning on a daily basis, that the pain is an
unspecified sort of condition. An "algia" of some kind. Thy wont find
the equivelent if a broken bone on an X ray.

A total brain scan could show some central nervous system
irregularity but I have my suspiscions even there . And then this
might be a finding in the people with seizures/tremors and the like
but not in the people that simply have pain. As soon as I get brave
enough and get educated enough on teh subject a brain scan is what I
want. A head MRI costs about 3 grand retail which I see as affordable
in this case.

An MRI of my achillies tendons is the next thing I want. If there is
damage I'll know the extent. If there is no damage I;ll know the pain
is just "pain" and nuthin's busted. But again. I need more ducation
on whta to look for and what it's supposed to look like because I
know I'll be aruguing with thw doctor. ANd getting these tetss is
like requesting brain surgery as someone here said. Seems like they
are only interested in persuing the disease THEY want you to have

Other than that I dont think anything else will show anything or will
matter. There is no cure except possibly the passing of YEARS

I KNOW what the cause is even if THEY won't admit it. My concern is
focused now on "Battle Damage Assessmment and Control" as we used to
say in the military.

Subject: chest pain update
Well, we met with the Workers' Comp doc today and things went pretty
much as expected. I went armed with literature from the package
insert, the "PDR" and "The Pill Book". Each quoted cardiovascular
side effects from Cipro, including the symptoms he was having (and
is still having). It's kind of scary that the symptoms are not
abating, yet the doctors refuse to acknowledge it might be a drug
reaction causing the problem. The doctor said that chest pain in a
56 year old male is common and has to be evaluated and it's probably
a coincidence that he was on Cipro at the time. Interestingly,
though, the doctor did keep the literature I brought and put it in
his file. Hope she reads all of it thoroughly. She's asked my
husband for a release of his medical records from the hospital so
she can review the results of all the tests they did. We've also
requested the same records for ourselves so we're all on the same
page. Looks like we may be looking for an attorney soon.

Subject: Eyes and Cipro

I'm a mom with a Critically ill child with Severe Infantile Mrfan
Syndrome. Needless to say his life is rocky to begin with. Those
unfamilar with Marfan , it's a connective tissue syndrome, heart
being the main target. This guys had 5 open-hearts to date and loads
of other surgeries, hospital stays TNC , eyes are a big problem in
Marf folks, sublexed lenses, cataracts, corneal edema to name a few
(all of these he has) loads of infection, UTI rampant as an infant,
is now a cathed child. Cipro has been the major drug of choice for
his re-occurring UTI's. Bone and tendon, not a prob or concern, he
is non-weight bearing. We've been aware of all the side-effects of
the drug for many years, the benefit to him has always out-weighed
the POSSIBLE problems. None of which he has ever really exhibited.
Occasionally his appetite is affected. He has just finished a 21 day
course of Cipro for another UTI, the 3 in 2 months, all treated with
Cipro. Suddenly he has lost vision in his left eye. We head to the
OR on Mon. for a look see, he has to be sedated and intubated under
cardiac/anethesia just for a good check-up of his eyes. He had a new
pacemaker implanted on May 29 and had a thorough eye check then,
both the Retinal specialist and his Opthomologist present, no new
probs detected. Now this no vision except light and dark and some
color. Sounds like a detachment, but as I was preparing for this
appt tomorrow I took another look at drugs as cause and found the
reference to eyes. Anyone heard of this prob with Cipro?
Thanks for listening and thanks for any info.

Let me first thank you for all of the info I've found here. Here's
my story- am I a 'victim' or just totally nuts? I was on Cipro for 4
years to treat and maintain remission of Crohn's(Inflammatory bowel
disease). I had no problems w/the medication, but noticed some vague
sense of not feeling quite right about three months before I got
really sick. In early Feb. of this year I was sitting and felt
instantly like I would faint. Numbness in my upper body- a jolt to
my brain, and everything went fuzzy except I did not lose
conciousness. This happenened again about a minute later. Had my
mother take me to the ER. Blood pressure was low and pulse rapid,
but other tests seemed normal. After this I developed severe vertigo
and continued jolts of almost fainting. Four trips to the ER, one
admission to Hosp. for cardiac evaluation and doctors and tests to
numerous to mention. For two months I was so dizzy I could do
nothing but lay in bed. Medically the only thing found was a severe
drop in blood pressure upon standing w/associated increase in heart
rate. (Under supervised testing BP was as low as 50/35) Was told I
had autonomic instability and that would explain the
weakness/fainting, and put on medication to raise BP. Well I am now
almost at the six month mark, and continue w/heart palpatations,
weakness, dizziness, muscle weakness, and a feeling of vibrations
under the skin that can be anywhere in the body, but move around.I
had bad anxiety in the beginning- don't know if Cipro or just fear of
what could possibly be wrong with me. I have been unable to work,
and if I can't return to work in the next two weeks I will lose my
job, and go on long term disability. Any input???

My low blood pressure is being controlled by medication, and I have

anyone been given a reasonable explanation for the heart

or what? Mt heart can pound for hours on end even though pulse rate

Subject: What a crazy ride, now I want to get off
I have been undergoing a multitude of viruses and baterial
infections in the last two months. This round, my doc prescribed
Avelox. Mind you I take Effexor and Buspar for major depression,
which hasen't been a problem in 3 years. So when after taking my
second pill of Avelox, I turned into a depressed raving lunatic.
Crying and in pain, I thought, here it comes again the depression
rearing its ugly head. I saw an emergency room doc, called my
pharmacist and called my psychatrist. No one said a word about the
avelox causing the problem. Today I went online and the prescribing
info for the med mentioned mood/mental changes. So I didn't take
the third pill and I am already feeling better, not great, but I
haven't cried today. Has this happened to others? Wow what a

Nice way to spend a weeks vacation huh?
Kida gotta love em!

Does this sound like anything anyone is familiar with? I really hate

Subject: chest pain
Hi all,
Haven't posted in awhile, but I've been reading all the postings for
the last few weeks. Just to update... The workers' comp doc is
still saying that my husband's chest pain (and all the money for the
gazillion tests they ran in two days at the hospital) couldn't
possibly be from the Cipro. Ditto with the cardiologist who saw him
at the hospital. Interestingly enough, the claim rep at Travellers
who handles the workers' comp claims appears to be on our side and
is working hard to get w.c. to pay the bills. I went with my
husband to his last appointment with the w.c. doc armed with product
literature, package inserts, copies of pages from the "PDR" and
still no luck. The doctors did want to keep the literature I
brought, however, which I thought was promising. They all looked at
it like they had never seen this info before. (Which obviously they
hadn't!) Now my husband is also experiencing either muscle, tendon
or joint pain (or all of the above) in his legs and arms. Since I
have read all of the side effects of Cipro I know that these can be
adr's of Cipro. He went to our primary doctor yesterday for the
pain in his legs/arms and lo and behold she actually was interested
in helping him. She kept the literature he brought with him (the
same we gave the other doctors) and took some blood tests to prove
somehow that the Cipro was involved. Her husband is a cardiologist
(not the one who treated him in the ER) and she asked permission for
her to let him see my husbands hospital records. She is in our
corner and feels that workers' comp should have to pay all the bills
since the Cipro was given for an injury sustained at work and the
w.c. docs sent him (even escorted him) to the hospital. That
said... She now wants to put my husband on massive doses (800 mg
tid) of ibuprofen for the leg/arm pain. My question to all of you
knowledgeable floxers out there is this: what can we expect from
taking ibuprofen after being hit by Cipro and should he even
consider taking this much of any anti-inflamatory drug? And if not,
will anything else work as well (or better)?

Subject: What treatment?
I have a question. I have been reading this group since realizing
part-way through a Levaquin treatment, during which I felt like I was
dying, that it was the Levaquin that was making me ill and not the
underlying illness (prostatitis). (I was on a week of Bactrim, a
week of Doxycyclin, two weeks of cipro and then I discontinued the
Levaquin after 6 days.)

To my horror, my symptoms have been following the patterns described
here. Feeling my heart pound, joint and muscle pain, disabling
fatigue, and most recently (a week after stopping the Levaquin), mild
neuropathy (numbness and a few burning sensations) and the familiar
horrible back-of-the-head and back-of-the-neck pressure.

I have been taking daily doses of Magnesium, Calcium, Multivitamins,
Shark Cartilege, Glucosamin Chondroitin and Flax Seed oil, based on
the advice I have seen on this site.

My QUESTION is: many people seem anxious to convince their doctor
that it is the Quinolones that caused their problems and have said
their doctors refuse to believe it.

My own doctor has an open mind. He says he is willing to believe
that my condition is due to the quinolones, but he raised what I
thought was a valid point: he said even if he agrees that it was,
what difference will that make in terms of what he does to treat me?
Nobody at this or any other web site has proposed a course of
treatment for quinolone toxicity. Nor do there seem to be any
clinical tests anybody can propose to verify that quinolones are the
culprit.

He is willing to listen and read what I give him. He has referred me
to a rheumatologist and a neurologist as well. But seriously: what
practical difference DOES it make to convince your doctor that
quinolones are the culprit? What treatment could/would they give you
that they wouldn't give you if they DIDN'T believe it was the
quinolones?
