Subject: Levaquin Leg Pain
I just joined the group. I took Levaquin in November 2002 for
pneumonia and developed extreme joint pain in my hands and legs after
2 pills. I stopped taking it immediatley, but to this day, I still
have rather severe swelling of my right knee.

Recently, I have been experiencing some severe pain in my right leg.
I am trying ot go on with my life -- going to the gym, etc. But I am
wondering if this is going to be a permanent thing.

Has anyone else had this and if so, has working out injured you
further?

I am so glad this group exists as when this happened back in Nov.,
this is where I got most of my information.

thanks

Al,
You are correct, most doctors are extremely ignorant about the side effects
and problems associated with quinolones especially Levaquin. I am amazed
every day when I hear another doctor has prescribed Levaquin for a (minor)
infection. I took Levaquin 2 l/2 years ago and still suffer from some of
the side effects. For the first year after taking Levaquin I read and
answered e-mails daily. I was so consumed with trying to get something
done about this horrible drug that I nearly went crazy. I had to back off
for awhile but I still read the posts. I wrote letters to anyone and
everyone that I thought might be able to help get this drug off the market.
I have contacted DATELINE numerous times asking if they would help in our
endeavor, but obviously the fact that many people have suffered horribly
from this drug is not as important some of the frivilos segments that they
air. Go figure! But I can assure you if just one of their people ever has
side effects from Levaquin they will be more than eager to jump on the band
wagon. As I previously stated I took Levaquin 2 1/2 years ago. At that
time I suffered HORRIBLE side effects and even contemplated suicide. I
truly did not want to live in the condition that I was in. Without my
faith in God and my Christian Church Family praying for me I would not be
here today. Many of the side effects are now gone or at least not as severe
as they were. I was put on Zoloft to help with the nervous system
disorder. It did help with the weeping, nervousness, agitation,
concentration etc. but it did a number on my being able to have a good
nights sleep. Before taking Levaquin I had no problem going to sleep or
being able to sleep sound thoughout the night. I have not had a good
nights sleep in 2 l/2 years. The Levaquin made me hallucinate at night
when I was able to sleep (which wasn't often) and the Zoloft made me jerk
and have vivid dreams and nightmares and restless sleep. The only time I
can sleep is if I take a sleeping pill. I work in Law Enforcement and am
on call 24 - 7 so I can't take a sleeping pill and not be able to go out if
I am called. I would give ANYTHING to have my life back before the Levaquin
nightmare and be able to go to bed and fall asleep and stay asleep. I said
all of this to make a point. I called my doctor (the one that gave me the
Levaquin) back in December and told him I wanted to go off the Zoloft and
would he tell me over the phone how I need to wean myself off the drug. I
know that you are not suppose to just stop taking it. He said I would have
to come into his office and he would talk to me about how to wean myself
off. Well, you know what that would mean (another $100.00 office visit,
just to tell me how to stop taking the Zoloft.) I told him to forget it
that I would go on the internet and figure it out myself. I have paid him
thousands of dollars already and he is not getting another dime out of me
just to tell me how to stop taking Zoloft. I weaned myself slowly and have
now been off the Zoloft for a month. I was hoping & praying that my
ability to sleep soundly would return but it has not. I feel that will be
a permanent side effect of the Levaquin. I do not have the vivid dreams
and restlessness but the insomnia remains. If anyone knows of anything that
may help I would appreciate hearing from you. E-mail to Judy at
rdavis@w... This board has played a valuable part in my being able to
cope with the horrors that I went though and continue to go through and I
hope that everyone will continue to read and respond to the posts.
A special thanks to Linda, Badoir, & David and the many others who have
supplied valuable information and continue to try and help others who are
hurting. Thank you all, Judy Davis

Subject: this is a dream, right?
Hello everyone. I am a 43 year old woman who was given a weeks worth
of sample packs of leviquin for uti and sinusitus. These were 500mg
for seven days. I stopped taking them on day 5 after feeling like I
had been poisoned. Knee pain, insomnia, nausia, ringing in ears...
The last day I took this was Jan 27 2003. I am still feeling knee
pain , some back pain... This is so crazy. I have always been very
healthy. I run and strengh train and eat soooo healthy. I weigh 115 .
I have never had any of these problems before and did not even know
about this drug and these reactions until after I started having
symtoms. I'm really into natural healing and health info, sure wish I
had been into it with this situation. Is there anyone lobbying
against this ? Has anyone gotten any feedback legally. What really
causes this to seep into the body so horribly and for so long after
it is stopped. Wish I could run without pain again. Thank you so much
Beth

Subject: INSOMNIA

Hello. It is 4:38 est and I am in my 3rd day/night of horrible
insomnia. I had been battling a nasty cold for about 6 weeks. 10
days ago a Dr. friend gave me 10 days worth of Levaquin. The cold is
gone but starting with the 2nd night on the meds I was having much
trouble sleeping. I am now in a deep insomnia pattern. I just lay
there and cannot fall asleep. It is almost impossible to even get
tired. I just started searching the Internet thinking maybe there
was some connection to the drug. Can anyone provide reliable
information and let me know if these symptoms are connected and are
they likely to fade now that the drug is gone. Thanks very much.

Subject: Could Levaquin Do This?
Hi I'm new here and need help.
I've been on Levaquin for 10 days for an ear infection and sinus
problems. Today will be the 11th day. For the following reasons I'm
not sure I should keep After about 4 days of taking it I started
getting a short, sharp, shooting pain going from my right ovary down
my inner thigh to the knee. After a week of this pain it also goes to
my lower right back and in my right side but it's more like a muscle
tightness than a pain.
Now my upper front thigh muscles and around my knees feel a
little achey when I walk. Before I read these posts I thought my pain
was due to a possible cysts on my ovary being this all started around
6 days before my period.
I've never had any cysts or problems like that
before or experienced this kind of pain on my period. Since it's
getting closer to the end of my period the pain gets less each day
but it seems like it's at a stand still right now lingering in the
areas I mentioned.
I've also noticed that after I take the Levaquin
the ovary pain gets a tiny bit more intense but not nearly as painful
as the first week before my period when I first started taking the
Levaquin. Can someone tell me is this the Levaquin or could I
possibly have developed an ovarian cyst? Should I get off this
medicine? I'm confused about weither it is really a cyst causing all
of this or the Levaquin. Thanks for any help.

Subject: CIPRO: Help, Please.
Hello Everyone:
I'm in desperate need of help and can't believe my
good luck in finding this forum.
I'm a 48+ female who, until a few weeks ago, was in
pretty good health.
My drama started a month ago with a very bad case of
diarrhea. Ended up in ER for dehydration and tests
showed a Urinary Tract Infection (nothing else).
Was prescribed 250mg of Cipro twice a day for 3 days.
I took one before bed and by 6am I was up crying with
my first ever panic attack. I thought I was cracking
up... bad dreams and high anxiety.
Went to the Family Doctor that day and he increased
(yes, increased)the Cipro to 500mg, 3 times per day
for 10 days. Plus, Flagyl (another antibiotic) for
the diarrhea (500mg, 3 times per day for 10days). He
also gave me Xanax for the anxiety thinking that the
illness was getting me down. (At this point, everyone
thought I had some type of parasitic problem causing
the diarrhea... )
Anyway, I seemed to get progressively worse over the
next 3 days... tremors, nightmares, anxiety, weakness
in the legs and arms, hands falling asleep easily
especially when laying down, chills. But the
scariest sympton was my eyes... My left eye felt like
it was moving and jerking, but not insync with the
right eye.
By now, I convinced myself I had MS or a brain tumor.
On Day 4, the Gastroenterologist took me off the
Cipro and gave me Colestid for the diarrhea.
By the 5th day, I thought I was going to die.
Started having sunburn sensation on legs, arms and
back. Got a red, measle-like rash that burned and
itched??? (Cold compresses seemed to help and made the
redness subside some.)
Since it was the week-end, I got the on-call doctor
who said it was good I stopped the Cipro and
prescribed Valtrex for the rash (thinking it was
shingles). She said that the muscle and eye
problems could be due to dehydration (since I wasn't
really eating or drinking much.)
Back to the family doctor for follow-up. He looks
at my back rash and says, 'Gee, this isn't shingles
but
an allergy to something. Did you change your soap
recently??" He prescribes Ativan and sends me to an
Opthamologist for my eye problem. He also wants me
to get an MRI of my brain (still waiting for insurance
approval).
Opthamologist says everything is fine... no nerve
problems, vision is fine, peripheral fine. Said it
must be a muscle problem. By now, I had found this
site and asked if it could be Cipro. He said he
thought is was the Ativan which is muscle relaxant
and may be causing the eye muscle to be weak. So, I
stop the Ativan (which was .5 that I took at night to
sleep... not much really). When I asked what I
should do if the eye jerking continues, he said to see
a Neurologist and get an MRI because it could be brain
lesions or a tumor. (wonderful...)
....I'm sorry this is so long but I feel someone is
finally listening...
Anyway... today is the 17th day since my first
Cipro pill. Most of the terrifying sypmtons have
subsided but I still get periodic burning of the back
(few times a day), weakness in my arms and legs
(especially the left side), a few minor hand twitches
throughout the day, and hands still fall asleep
easily. However, my biggest problem is still my
'jerky' left eye (no headaches, Thank God). This
makes it hard to focus so my daily life has really
been affected.
At this point I'm thinking the worse but hoping for
the best. Does this sound like a Cipro reaction?
Can this bring on MS? Is there anything I can do (and
I mean ANYTHING) to get this out of my system quickly?
Again, I appreciate your help and patience.
Pam

Subject: Tequin (Newbe)

I just finished seven days of Tequin, prescribed for pneumonia. When
I took the first pill I did not shut my eyes for almost 2 days. My
lips were tingling and my heart was racing. I thought all this was
due to breathing treatments, steroid shot, and steroid pills. I
never imagined that the "antibotic" was the problem. I continued to
have these problems and then some blurred vision, ringing in ears and
pain between my shoulder blades. I'm still thinking that all this is
just the effects of pneumonia and the steriods. After I took the
seventh (last in dose) pill I told my co-workers that I felt like I
had an electric current in my trunk and my arms. I am also
experiencing severe swelling and irratation in my vagina. I mentioned
that my heart didn't really hurt, but I felt like it might explode.
I laid on a hot pad trying to relieve the pain in my shoulders and I
began having severe leg cramps. Once that subsided I decided to
research the side effects of my combination of meds. I was shocked
when I read about Tequin. The first thing I read mentioned that it
is sometimes fatal with only one dose! The warnings listed on the
prescription didn't mention anything so severe. I don't know what to
do. After reading some of these posts I'm concerned that this
condidtion may last for a long time. Does anyone have any answers
for me?

Subject: New here----need answers
Hi. I am a 41 yr old female. I took the antibiotic Levaquin two
and a half years ago. It gave me a very, very bad headache and
some ringing in my ears and dizziness, but I was better able to
tolerate this antibiotic then others so I took it for a week. After
that time, for the next 2 yrs, I had frequent bouts of loose bowels
and a "flu-like " illness . It was also accompanied by a "foggy"
feeling and dizziness and difficulty concentrating. I also had mild
pins and needles in my hands and feet. I was also noticing that my
pulse raced, and I was "AWARE" more of my heart beat. Bouts of
these "viruses" would last about a week, and then I would feel ok,
except for the pins and needles , and the rapid heart rate.

This past July, I was given Levaquin once again. The first day
taking it, I felt so weak and dizzy, that I could barely walk. I
then had burning, pins and needles in my feet and hands which was
worse than anything I had before. i was itchy, so I called my doc
and asked if I should discontinue the levaquin. Nurse said "NO"> I
asked her to check with him again, and she said he felt I should
keep taking it or else the infection that they were checking me for
could worsen and the results could be "detrimental".

I continued to take the med, and by day 5 I couldn't walk or hold
a glass of water by myself. I had pain and burning in every muscle
of my body. It even hurt to move my eyes around the room.

Doc dx'd me with fibromyalgia (and I do have the tender points).
I have a slew of symptoms including:

All over muscle pain

Numbness/pins and needles

headaches

hairloss

ibs

FATIGUE

memory problems

concentration problems

Difficulty adding numbers

Sleep disturbances

Jaw pain

Rapid (constant) pulse

I cannot walk very far, or sit in one positon very long without
my muscles stiffening up. Barometric pressure changes seem to make
me worse. I feel like I have the flu every day.

Amitripyline has restored my sleep for the most part, and with
that, my symptoms have gotten better.

I have not worked since July. I lost my business. I can barely
make dinner and once in a while leave the house with my husband.

Do any of you think that my fibromyalgia was brought on by or
worsened by an adverse reaction to Levaquin? If I was made ill by
this drug, what can I do about it? Will I recover? Should I be
filing a complaint or finding a lawyer?

Thank-you----any and all input would be appreciated so very much.
My life has been taken away from me.

xo--lori

Subject: Floaters in the eyes
I want to know if someone who took cipro or an other quinolone had
floaters in the eyes after it and is floaters desappear gradually,
because i have it for 3 month now and it seem to be less dark and
bigger. I dont thing that is related with the age because im only 25
yrs! I saw an ophtalmologist an he said that my vision is good and i
only have some floaters in the vitreous. Is floaters can be related
with some deposits in the vitreous of the eyes because i see this in
the RX information of Ciprofloxaxin (After oral administration
ciprofloxacin is widely distributed throughout the body. Tissue
concentrations often exceed serum concentrations in both men and
women, particularly in genital tissue including the prostate.
Ciprofloxacin is present in active form in the saliva, nasal and
bronchial secretions, sputum, skin blister fluid, lymph, peritoneal
fluid, bile and prostatic secretions. Ciprofloxacin has also been
detected in lung, skin, fat, muscle, cartilage, and bone. The drug
diffuses into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); however, CSF
concentrations are generally less than 10% of peak serum
concentrations. Low levels of the drug have been detected in the
aqueous and vitreous humors of the eye.). Is floaters can be seen if
you have an irritation of the retina or something like that? If this
floaters caused by deposits of cipro, is this reversible? I want to
know if someone had is floaters desappeared with time to give us some
hope! I saw that Melvin J. Novak,Jr on message 2851 wrote:(The visual
changes in me were a BIG increase in floaters (which are sloughed
cells in the aqueous), a change in vison acquity, and increased
sensitivity to light. All of these things have resolved.) If someone
know im, let me a e-mail because i thing that he can give us some
hope!

Subject: Tequin

I took Tequin for 7 days ending last Thursday. I mentioned before
that I now realize that many of the things I experienced and thought
was due to the pneumonia and steroid breathing treatments, shot and
pills I was taking. I never considered that it was "just" the
anitbotic. My question will probably be stupid, but do I need make a
special trip to my doctor to relay these side effects(right now I'm
not bothered enough for a doctors' visit) or just wait til my next
regular appointment in mid April? I feel really dumb that I didn't
realize that I needed to go to the ER when my heart was racing and I
didn't sleep for almost two days! I'm wondering it I don't report
these things to the Dr. now, if I have serious problems "down the
road" and/or needed to file suit would I be "covered" if I didn't
report these in a timely fashion? If I make the report to the FDA
will that be sufficient?

I've not seen Tequin mentioned in the Forum - - has anyone taken it?

Subject: Levaquin and/or Tegretol

Hello. I'm new to this board but it has caught my interest only
recently. Here's the story and I'll try to make it short and please
forgive me if it has already been covered before but I tried to look
through all the messages and couldn't find one completely similar.
My father was put on Tegretol Dec.02 for Trigiminal Neuralgia. It
was mid-jan. he started feeling ill like the flu and his blood
pressure went up. His doc told him it was just a bug and directed him
to another doc who prescribed Levaquin for the 'virus'. That evening
he broke out in a rash on his legs. By the weekend it had spread
covering his body. He only took Levaquin for two days then he was
told to get off of it. Needless to say he got continually
worse,became very irritable,hard chills,fever,rash was itching so
bad, everything he put on it (directed by doctor)burned him. Just
recently he found out that the lights in the room had a lot to do
with his burning skin also. He has now been off of Tegratol for about
two weeks. He was put on Prednesone to clear up rash, last two days it
appears to be scaling off(shedding). As of this week the doctor who
does feel it is a drug reaction, just not sure which one,has taken him
off of vitamins,aspirin,antacids,shampoo,soap,detergent,
deodarant,etc... to clear out his system. Well like I said he is
feeling better in his mind,no more fever. Still has chills and rash.
And his eyes have been swollen for a week and his right eyesight has
gotten very weak. I guess what I'm asking is if anyone has input on
Tegretol or Levaguin (yes i realize this is the Quinolone site)or
mixed together causing this type of reaction. At least he was taken
off Levaquin within two days but the Tegretol was in him for over a
month. The only thing positive has been that he went on the Atkins
diet (caused by a misdiagnosis of diabetes early on in this reaction)
but unfortunately the prednesone blows him up so you can't tell about
his diet. Anyway any input you might have would be appreciated. I've
read up on things like Stevens-Johnson syndrome and so
forth, fortunately he isn't the worse case I've seen but it has been
one serious wild ride.
Thank you for listening.

Subject: I experienced mutitude of nasty side effects with Levaquin
I was recently prescribed 10 days of levaquin for sinus infection. It
was my 4th cycle of levaquin treatment in 12 months - I had been
hospitalized for asthma 12 days in the past year.

I had noticed some side effects with Levaquin in past treatments, but
attributed them to Prednison which I had been on concurrently to
control my asthma. But this time, I was not taking Prednisone, and I
experienced intense side effects which included the following:
nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdonminal pain, dread/fear, confusion,
dizziness, gas, insomnia, involuntary eye movement, skin itching,
lack of appetite, light-headedness, loss of sense of identity,
pounding heartbeat, tingling sensation, tremors, unpleasant taste,
and darkening of pigmentation on my cheeks.

The worst of these problems was insomnia. I could not fall asleep at
all for 4 nights and felt like a zombie during the day. I did not
sleep for 4 days! My doc prescribed sleeping medication to remedy the
situation but I still could not sleep for more than 1.5 hours at a
time. 3 days after I stopped the Levaquin, I am still experiencing
bad insomnia, and am sleeping only about 3 hours (1.5 hours at a
stretch) a night without any medication. I am currently trying to
follow the advice of a couple of books on insomnia in order to
overcome it without resorting to sleeping medication.

I experienced a bitter taste on my tongue that prevented me from
tasting foods. The tingling sensations were up and down my arms and
my hands trembled. I normally have rock-steady hands.

After day 5 on Levaquin, I found several web sites that dealt with
Levaquin side effects and realized that my symptoms were due to this
medication. I am now resolved never to resort to any of the Cipro
class of drugs ever again.

Subject: went to DR today and he perscribed....
Yep, he perscribed Levaquin for Rhinosinusitus (sinus infection). I
always come home and research medication doctors perscribe before
taking it. First thing I noticed is, I am taking 800 Mg of Motrin
or Ibuprofen, for a muscle injury. That is one thing listed on the
pharmacy info sheet to be aware of when taking Levaquin. Then I
read all this info on Levaquin and it really freaked me out. I'm
not taking this crap. I called the Dr's office back and left a
message for the Dr. to call me. His secretary told him I had a
problem taking the Levaquin with Motrin. His nurse calls back and
says the Dr says it's okay to take the Levaquin with Motrin. I told
her that wasn't the main issue. The main issue is I don't feel
comfortable taking Levaquin, period. She questioned me!!?? She
says, "Why, it's only an antibiotic!" I told her I wanted to speak
to the Dr. about it. She said he would call back. Ha! Should I
find a new Dr.? And this was my first visit at this place.

Thanks,
Ken

Subject: Hi, need advice..
Hi,
So glad to have found this group..Here is my story..
I am 30 year old female and I was given 500 mg of levaquin and 30 mg
of Prednisone (steroid) for a returning sinus infection that was very
bad. Cefaclor did not clear it up which is I guess why my doc went
to the strong stuff. Anyway after a day I noticed some spots in
vsion and some dizziness. Told doctor and he said stop Prednisone so
I did. I took 1 and a half more Levaquin and still had problems so I
stopped it to. Then he gave me cipro. I took half and stopped it.
I started taking only benedryl after that, helped only a little. My
sinus infection had cleared but I have been a mess ever since and
this was a week ago. Keep in mind I am allergic to Penicillin and
other drugs. Anyway here are my symptoms:

Weakness above right kneee
Pain in right eye (went to eye doc and he said looked ok)
Burning and some itching in skin (hands, face and eyes)
red rash (kinda like flushing) on chest and neck that comes and goes
headache
mild sore throat
gastric upset
no appettite

So, to recap I took two and a half Levaquin and half a cipro and had
problems.

My main question is this. I went to ER and they said I was having a
reaction, so they gave me pepcid and more steroids by I.V. This
helped me for approximately 14 hours and then symptoms returned with
a vegence. The doc said to take low dose steroids 10mg to see if
that helped. Does anyone else have success with steroids helping
there symptoms? Could it make it worse?

Any help is greatly appreciated..
Thanks,
Debbie

Well, I cannot believe this drug Levaquin.
All I would really like to know is can one die from this poison?
I took one dose, and Iam a reck.
The Dr. yawned last night when I called him at 1am, and I was,I dont
know how to explain it or, dont exactly know why I was feeling like I
was going to die, and the Dr.said, if I did`nt have a rash that it
was
probably not an adverse reaction. And he is full of it....
OMG, I dont know what to do.

I was told to take Benadryl, and Tylenol for the head ace, and cough
med for cough.
I went to the Dr.for sinus infection.
This drug is "POISON."
Am I gonna be ok you guys?
I take no drugs for anything,I despise pills.
The drug store did`nt give me any readout for possible side effects
so,I trusted the Dr.to do no harm this one time b/c usually if I have
to take a med, which very rare, I read in detail all reactions.
I have a whole new perspective today about the med field.
I threw something at the wall this bright new day*
that is not me.God help us

Dear Mary,
I too felt many of the same symptoms as you when I experienced my ADR to Avelox
over a year and a half ago. I went into anaphylactic shock after taking the
second pill. Since then, I've had numerous problems and I have to say that the
anxiety and night terrors were probably the worst. (I actually dove out of my
bed thinking is was a pool once). I'm 42, happily married with five children
and I truly thought after being floxed that I would never be the same. I was
wrong, I am sooo much better, but its taken quite a long time to get there.
There is hope and I have to say the anxiety was the first to go thank God. I
still wonder everyday what might go wrong with my body and still can't put a
pill in my mouth, but the feeling of gloom and doom had definately gone away.
There is lots of advice I can give you that worked for me, so if you would like
to talk, just e-mail me. God Bless and hang in there, you WILL get better,
Charlene

Subject: [quinolones] Things are not good

Thanks for all the posts. I am now into the 10th day after taking
the Levaquin and Cipro. My ADR's are getting worse. I am having
what feels like nerve pain? or like every nerve is my body,
especially my spine and abdomen, are raw. I am now also having hot
flashes all over my body, and the anxiety continues. It is an
unbearable hell. I have to take half a Xanax to sleep for even two
hours. The symptoms seem worse when I try to lay down. I don't know
if I did anything to make this chage for the worse. I forgot to take
the Calmag yesterday, I tried to stay busy, I had some body work --
Reiki -- which is laying on of the hands and gentle massage. It
seemed to get worse after the Reiki. I am looking for any medical
articles that I can take to my DR. If anyone can point me in this
direction I would appreciate it. I looked on the homepage, but didn't
find much. My husband's aunt works at the NIH, and he is going to
call her for any research related info. It seems that my symptoms
are getting worse as the days after stopping the drug progress. Has
anyone else ever has this effect?

I know some people said that the debilitating anxiety went away
first. My muscle pain has been there, but not the main issue at
this point, but that seems to be getting worse also. I also seem to
be getting more confused and disorietned. I guess my hope was that as
this stuff worked its way out of my stystem these things would get
better not worse.

My despair grows, and I look at my family and weep. I feel like my
life has been taken away from me at the age of 38. When I lay awake
with the pain and tremors at night I contemplate suicide, which is
the worst of all. I don't know how much more of this pain I can
take. I know I can't hang in there for three or five years. Some
folks here say that in a few weeks things started to improve, but as
I read more and more I lose hope.
