12/82 PRODUCT LIABILITY - PHARMACEUTICALS - CHLOROQUINE CASE APPEAL

Hearings opened on November 15 1982 at the Tokyo High Court on the appeal of the damage suit filed by 87 patients suffering from the side effects of the drug chloroquine case. They originally sought 14.8 billion yen in damages from the state, 6 pharmaceutical companies and 14 medical institutions. In February 1982 the Tokyo District Court awarded the defendants 2.8 billion yen in damages from the defendants. All parties are now appealing.
